Anyone else having problems opening this link?

Because it is a Canadian publication, you need to say "Eh" as you click the link in order for it to open. ;)

Slightly more seriously, there is an option to the right of the article where readers may submit notices of errors in the article. Please feel free to let the Spectator know that the country is the Dominican Republic.

If you read the article, it spells out Dominican Republic (see below) they were probably saving page space. But I do think people look to closely to jump on anyone that makes that fopa:

Carmela Fragomeni
The Hamilton Spectator
(Dec 29, 2009)
Former Hamiltonian D'Arcy Wright is groggy and disoriented, but alive -- found 18 days after he says he was kidnapped at gunpoint in the Dominican Republic.

well...in this case

As we all know, there is also a Caribbean Nation which goes by the name of Dominica. The natives and affairs of that island are referred to as "Dominican" (emphasis on the 2nd I). All the folks in the D.R. know what was meant by the "Dominican" reference but this was a Canadian publication and some there may not know the difference. Someone may have just read the title and cancelled their trip to Dominica for fear of being kidnapped at gunpoint.

Responding to Blaine:

Except in this case 'Dominican' refers to a person, much like an American is a person, and would you not refer to the USA as American.

The Dominican Republic is the proper name of the country, and to use a noun that describes a person is confusing and grammatically incorrect.

Of course you are free to use any incorrect term you choose to use. Just don't act surprised when you are corrected.

Good for you Blaine. However now you are incorrect by choice.

Most people learn a little something over the course of 14 years, but there are always the exceptions.
