Over the last two weeks I have been following all the posts and threads: well …. I’ll stop there and be honest …. just the certain few that have attracted all the interest and comments of the members, and am wondering ….<o></o>
as we are approaching 2010 where the DR1 discussion board goes from here?
More specifically whether the relationships that have been developed over the years (long before I joined), which were obvious from reading the interaction between the posters, can ever be the same again.<o></o>

A very distinct line seems to have been drawn between the “believers” and the “non-believers” and this is reflected in the way posters are responding to each other.<o></o>
Eventually, (hopefully) the hue and cry will die down and the forum will go back to the usual diet of “newbies” asking questions which inevitably attract the usual response from an “old hand”; either pointing them in the direction of the “search function” or dispensing a sarcastic one-liner! But …. where will it go from there?<o></o>
Will we still have the banter between posters or will there be an “atmosphere” with posters getting a dig-in when the opportunity arises? ...

Just food for thought …. and only time will tell but … Mrs Reidy & myself would like to wish all DR1’ers the best for 2010 and here’s hoping everybody can have a fresh start.

Tropical Regards
Reidy

Reidy620, you are right. There are the believers, the non-believers, and then another group to which I belong, which I feel is probably large. We are those who have read, reserved judgement and comment, and hoped for a positive outcome for D'arcy, Curt and Sandi, the posters on dr1 who have become so very polarized, and, of course, for dr1 as a valuable source of credible information from credible, experienced individuals.

I look forward to the day when all of this is put to bed and everyone is able to move forward in their lives.

Perhaps today, the final day of 2009, should serve as the metaphorical end to all of this "stuff." Tomorrow is a new day, a new year, and a new opportunity for each of us to make a fresh start.

Why not?

There will be new headlines and interesting threads in the new year. Only a handful of posters will leave DR1. It is a great message board with many regulars. Some are addicted to DR1. I read it everyday to keep up on things DR related. I do not mpost often but I still enjoy the good the bad and the ugly on DR1. It would be boring without it. I could stand a little less excitment than the last couple of weeks. LOL
I can't wait to hear some sad story from the new tourists in the sankie forum in January. Let's make a pact not to scare them away so we can have some silly entertainment for a while.
Happy New Year Everyone!
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. :)

Sometimes you need to shake the tree and see what falls out :)

DR1 will go on as normal and be even better come Jan 1, 2011.

We are like any community, we have a mix of good and bad, strange and true.
Drama is inevitable from time to time, sometimes it's healthy, sometimes not.

We have some cool stuff in the pipeline, will be rolling out the new look to the entire site. We will do out best to remain as the most popular English language site in the DR and one of the busiest in the Caribbean region.

Have a great 2010! :)

I hope so Robert, but I also feel that a lot of the "old hands" will no longer command the respect that they previously had by virtue of their "seniority".
I, for one, will look upon their subsequent posts with a degree of scepticism because of their inability to "wake up and smell the flowers" about recent events. Events which, now a lot more facts have come to light, are obvious to all!

Shake it good

Often when you "shake that tree," the old and diseased fruit falls out and a new crop of vibrant interesting flowers bloom

You see the dates people joined? There is an ever-changing cast on the board but some people don't go away and without the stuff of life whatever would people talk about? This whole event over the past few weeks reminded me a little bit of a famous Sunshine we had on here that was escorted out of the country by US Marshals? that was an interesting time.

DR1 is valuable for the people you meet in real life because of it...I look at my first post on here and laugh and laugh at how the story has gone along in my life....

Howmar was a Drug Dealer...

Nothing so romantic or dangerous. I believe he was a podiatrist wanted on charges of medical insurance fraud, if I remember correctly.

As for where this site goes from here, it will move forward and continue to improve, offering what few if any other sites offer in terms of valuable, pertinent and up-to-date information on this always beautiful and sometimes baffling country and it's people.

Members come and go for all types of reasons, and it is not harsh to state that no one member is bigger than the site. That is the reality.

We have Robert, Mr. Lu and TJMurray leading the way with intelligence and a vigorous willingness to strive for a better DR1. That, along with members who contribute in a positive fashion, is all DR1 needs.

If any fallout occurs over petty bickering and childish grudges, DR1 can and will survive the fallout and come out better for it in the end.

There have been controversial posts on the DR1 for as long as I have been here and there have been skirmishes between members too. Nevertheless, the forum has has endured and continues to provide the best information about the Dominican Republic on the internet. Whenever I have a question about anyting involving the DR, I post here, and inevitably I have recieved unselfish, good, and valuable information. I just hope that I have been able to give back just a small bit for all that I have recieved.

Where does it leave and lead DR1?

I think that the board, as it always have, will be an endless wealth of information about the DR and for people needing info and help on these subjects. These "third parties" will keep getting the information they need from all spectrums of members. They will get helpful, time-money-and-mind saving information.

And besides that, in-between the members from all sides of island and all spectrums of life, there will be stories, cockfights, bruised egos, analytical discussions and heated arguments. But there will also be humor, relax and desire to help other. New friendships will be formed, and people will keep on getting to know each other personally.

The board will remain what it has always been - the lake where all kinds of fish swim and go about their daily lives. The DR1 lake.

This forum has certainly lost it's appeal to me. I never knew their were so many people that would gloat in another's problems or demise.

I think I posted the following on the wrong thread. I meant to post it here, since this is the most appropriate setting for my point, and I think it reinforces Chip's premise.

What a perversely petty little show; The obsequious and obligatory name-calling, and all the scurrying about choosing sides, when in fact there are no "sides" to choose.

We have seen the most honorable intentions of a cohesive community morph into a mad and desparate scramble to become part of a "Lord of the Flies" sequel. Surreal.

I agree with the gloat part as far as some members are concerned. Just challenge them or you could just stop posting which I doubt you will.
