Could you explain the meaning and the origin of this expression please?

"Aqui hay gato entre macuto!!"

Literally, it means there is a cat in the bag.
The real meaning is that something is not right.

This comes from another saying:"Cuidado que no te den gato por liebre!" Or, 'be careful they don't give you a cat instead of a hare' Which means, of course, to trick a person.

So, if someone says that there is a 'gato entre el macuto" be cautious, because something is not right.

It's the same as aqui hay gato encerrado ! Which means everything is unclear and something is fishy here


I agree with ElvisNYC completely and would also like to add that in my opinion 'aqui hay gato entre macuto' is the colloquial version of the more common expression which he referenced- 'aqui hay gato encerrado' which is heard or used by most Spanish speakers.
