Illness Question

Last night around 9:30 I ate a pizza here in Sosua and afterwards (about 2 hours later) my stomach started rumbling. With this pizza I had about 5 or 6 Presidentes, but no more.

I returned to my Condo and spent the night running to the bathroom with severe diarrhea that looked and smelled just like the pizza I ate. I would go about every hour, steadily. I also began to feel very slight chills, as if I have a low grade fever.

About 11:30 this morning I made myself throwup since my stomach felt real bad, and nothing but pizza came up. After doing this I felt a lot better in my stomach and some energy came back, but I still have the feelings of chills & possible low grade fever. There's no headache, so to speak of, nor eye pain.

I did manage to eat a plate of fruit at Rocky's with two bottles of water, and my stomach feels as though it will accept it.

I mainly just have slight chills and fatigue now. I NEVER get sick in America and I've never gotten sick here in the DR in the 8 times I've been here since April 2008. I arrived here January 6th and I'm scheduled to depart next Thursday the 21st.

Can anyone give me any advice? Should I see a doctor, and if so, where, or should I wait a day or two more?

Drink plenty of water and see if you feel like you're improving but if you're concerned, see a doctor or ask at the pharmacy.

my advice is:
go to farmacia and ask for following:
pedialyte (rehydrating drink, comes in variety of flavours) and
zentel (parasite killer; two pills, take one now and another one in a week).
this will take care of dehydration and possible parasite issue.
do not eat solid foods, and def no fruits. settle for soup (chicken/beef broth is the best).
i hope you feel better soon!

You might want to try the Brat diet Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast for the diarrhea.

sounds like a staph aureus food issue. Plenty of fluids (not presedente!!), rice and banannas if tolerated. Don't use any antidiarrhea medication (i.e. Immodium - body is trying to get rid of the bacteria!). Rest. You should feel much better in 24 hours. If not, then perhaps a visit to the doc would be in order.

I went to the new clinic in Sosua, Centro Medico Cabarete, that's on the way to Cabarete and they gave me an IV with some medicine to lower the fever and a serum with vitamins in it to replenish what was lost from dehydration. They also did a urine and blood analysis to check for parasitic and bacterial infections and they also checked for Dengue. All came back negative. Today I feel good, the fever is gone, and I'm hanging out in Santiago with some friends.
I was there for about 3 hours and the total cost was $150 USD.

I had something similar in October when I was there. I also never get stomach problems at home and have travel to the DR 8 times. In my case I had the diarrhoea and the chills I also had almost constant headache and fatigue. I was not incapacitated but I was not having much fun. I went to a doctor at the Corominas clinic in Santiago and he ran a number of tests including blood, urine and stool and everything came back negative. My symptoms seemed to improve and I thought it had passed but then they kept recurring.
When I arrived back home to Canada I went to see a doctor and again more tests and the special stool sample test that they did discovered a parasite, cyclospora cayetanensis. I was treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) and within three days I felt 80% better and by day five all the symptoms were gone.

I would get yourself thoroughly checked once back in the States just to make sure. The doctor I saw in Santiago was a specialist and he missed it and had know idea what was wrong with me.

Good luck and good health.

Tom.

Tom.

I work at a free clinic for Haitians run here on the north coast by Dominican Crossroads (Dr Bob). TMP-SMX is one of the most common medications prescribed and filled from our pharmacy.

The "bug" you took home is common here.
