I am hoping to travel alone in the D Rep. As a female I am wondering if it is safe to do so. Also - are there any cheap budget hostels, or huts to stay in? Any advice is welcome - thanks
I traveled around the country for a few weeks by myself, I didn't have any problems at all. Everyone was very nice and helpful. It's all a matter of common sense, don't go out late at night alone, avoid situations you're not comfortable with, the same things you would do in your home country.
get in touch with the Peace Corps office on Bolivar (at least I think it's still there).
They have people all over the country and they in turn know where to go and stay on the cheap..
