First successful pancreas transplant in DR

The Hospital General de la Plaza de la Salud (HGPS) announced a successful pancreas transplant to a diabetic patient with chronic renal disease. The patient, 27-year old Suleika Perez Suero suffered from diabetes type 1, and was insulin-dependent since she was 10 years old. The patient had been undergoing two years of hemodialysis.

Dr. Julio Amado Castaños Guzmán, president of the Board of Trustees of HGPS, made the announcement. He said the HGPS is a pioneer in transplants from deceased donors since 2007. The HGPS has carried out 399 transplants including: kidney from deceased donors (191), kidney of living donors (109), liver (52), bone marrow (45), heart (1) and pancreas (1).
