The first two dogs trained to detect odors released by insects are on the job at Las Americas International Airport. The dogs are the first two of 30 trained dogs that agriculture authorities hope will detect snails and fruit flies in citrus fruit and vegetables and other smuggled agriculture products that may come in people’s luggage or in cargo arriving to Dominican seaports and airports.

The Dominican Republic is one of the world’s leading exporters of bananas and citrus fruits and needs to ensure that the invasive species do not enter Dominican territory.

The effort is coordinated with the International Regional Organization for Agropecuarian Sanitation (OIRSA).
