Driving on the defensive is a must in the Dominican Republic. The country is ranked tops on the list of highest traffic fatalities per 100,000 population. Late last week, there was a tragic accident on the Autovia del Este near San Pedro de Macoris, a reminder of the need to exercise preventive driving. The net result was three fatalities and three injured. A small car had an encounter with one of those “road trains”, a semi-truck with two 40-foot trailers.
There are over a million motorcycles and about 1.3 million cars in this country. Lax enforcement of the licensing process also puts very questionable people behind the wheel. All drivers should remember that this is a real situation, and not something made up to scare potential drivers from overseas. Drive safely.
