For decades, the transit authorities have looked the other way allowing motorcyclists to flagrantly break the transit laws. The politicians have seen these more than three million drivers as voters and have been lax in applying the law.

As a result, those driving cars and those on foot, need to fend for their lives. If there is an accident, the matter is worse. There seems to be an agreement among judges to penalize the driver of the vehicle if a motorcyclist is injured, even if the motorcyclist was blatantly at fault.

Hopes the nonchalance would change with the switch in government from the Dominican Liberation Party to the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), have not yet materialized. President Luis Abinader first appointed a truckers union employee, Rafael Arias to the National Transit and Transport Institute (Intrant), then the well-known radio transit expert Hugo Beras...

Quit selling so many of the cheap Chinese bikes, that aren't safe and allow every cheapie-cheapie to own one.
Then crush every motorcycle or scooter that intentionally runs a red light or is caught racing or doing wheelies.
Anyone not wearing a helmet has his bike seized until he shows up wearing a helmet and pays a 2500 peso fine. 2nd offense the bike is crushed.
Anyone running past a Digisett checkpoint to avoid a helmet infraction or papers check has his bike crushed. Have police on bikes to run them down
After a month of this type action most will become behaved lemmings.

I can't agree with your helmet thing. If they don't want to wear one, it's on them. However, I would be in favor of a law making them financially responsible for their med care.

I would add crushing bikes when the rider rides on sidewalks. It's very common on the autopista de San Isidro with their nightmare traffic. I've never been hit but can see how the potential for an accident is there.

Except if you're a gringo you will be on the hook for their life or amputated leg no matter what laws they pass on med care.
And what qualifies as a helmet ? Baseball batting helmets are waived through Digesett and almost never do they strap a helmet under their chin.
And why does a 6 year old not require a helmet and only the driver ?
In reality you can never train all the chimps on motos

"I would be in favor of a law making them financially responsible for their med care." If the moto operator had no helmet and/or had no documents for the bike and/or was blatantly at fault all medical costs should be on him/her.

Most do not know this, but even with only the cheap "Ley" Insurance your company pays the medical bills for the Moto. I had a girl on a Moto run broadside into my car and broke her leg many years ago. My company paid for her broken leg and no jail or anything else for me.....And I had my own lawyer and the Insurance sent a lawyer to court also.........

Where has Oscar been? There already is a motorcycle regulation plan.

I think Chico's plan is too lenient.

The last few days the P.D has been stopping them and removing them via a truck on Sarasota Ave. The P.D was 10 deep. They hauled off 12 to 15 motos in the short time I observed. I don't see how this problem will be solved. The deliver everything from fried chicken to medicine. These guys support their families' making deliveries.

This is the key. AMET needs to have motos patrolling all the time to be able to see and stop all this reckless behavior. They need to have one moto at every road check point to chase down violators who don't stop. They need to enforce the helmet laws every day. Yesterday in Cabarete is saw two moto drivers with no helmet just chatting with AMET officers in front of the police station. Some days they stop them and confiscate the moto, other days they just let them ride on by - no problem.

This whole thread and the suggestions obviously make sense, but I would like to see DIGESETT in long term actually enforcing all of this to the masses of the motos... The govt is often advertising on hiring tens of thousands of PN officials, so they would need to do the same for DIGESETT...
