A lot !!! And ust from witnessing the situation on the streets i would share the blame between cars and motos 50/50.
Motos are driving totally reckless and cars are totally ignoring motos.

In the Dominican Republic, motorcycle accidents account for a significant portion of traffic-related deaths. According to various reports:

  • In 2021, out of 4,391 accidental and violent deaths, traffic accidents were the number one cause, with 1,874 deaths, representing 42.7% of the cases. Given that motorcycle accidents are the most common type of traffic accident, this suggests a high number of motorcycle fatalities, although exact figures for motorcycle deaths specifically are not detailed in this source.

  • For the year 2022, at least 2,921 people died in traffic accidents, with motorcycle accidents accounting for 57.17% of these deaths, equating to approximately 1,670 motorcycle-related fatalities.

  • More recently, in 2024, it was reported that more than 3,000 people died in accidents, with 70% of these involving motorcycles, which would mean around 2,100 motorcycle riders died.

These figures indicate that the number of motorcycle riders dying in accidents in the Dominican Republic has been around 1,670 to 2,100 annually in recent years, with a possible trend towards an increase. However, exact annual statistics can vary, and these numbers should be seen as part of a broader trend rather than exact yearly counts.

Saw that exact same thing 30 minutes ago in Boca Chica. Asshole SUV pulled out in front of a moto who was blowing his horn. Moto driver had a woman on the back with no helmet so it could have been very bad. Thank God no injuries.

It's sad to hear every time this happens, it's gutwrenching because you know survival's very unlikely. Anyone who's ridden a motorcycle or scooter knows how quickly it can go south. I believe it's both motorcycle and car drivers like Manuel and Nan said. The general ignorance of consequence and just complete lack of empathy is alarming. A lot of the guys on motorcycles drive like other vehicles on the road are somehow made of air or never going to hit them or, and this is new, under the constant obligation to get out of their way (think motorcycles having ambulance type right-of-way rules and truck horns to boot). The car/suv/pickup/bus drivers are like "if they don't care, we don't either, our vehicles protect us, if they are that stupid they deserve it". No amount of helmets or riding gear (which only touring type or foreign riders use) can completely save you from a crash and forget about hoping most drivers are looking out to protect you.

Just in 2024: more than 1,800 deaths in car/motos accidents. 71% of the accidents last year, were from motos.

According to my wife it was not the exact same thing at all.
In Cabarete, the moto was in the wrong by causing the accident and paid the price.

In the Cabarete accident, the moto driver turned left directly in front of the SUV. Nothing the other driver could do but they did react immediately but it wasn't enough.

It's really sad to hear about such accidents. It serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to be careful and aware on the road, especially on motorcycles. Condolences to the families of the victims. Let's all stay safe out there.
