"Desperation" ???
Why everybody has to be a Victim today ? I don't get it. Why they can't be called what they are !? Two idiots !
I see young people not even give themselves a chance at success here in their own country. Even the 20 somethings i've heard make the trek to enter the US illegally. At least try and fail before you turn to this. I think there are many more options in the last ten years for a young dominican to at least have a decent life in the outskirts of the city. I'd rather work a low-paying professional job than go and clean toilets in the states with the risk of being deported every time i wake up.

Makes you think twice about flying from PUJ. Same with SDQ?
It's always in the back of my mind when i flight out of PUJ. There was an incident a few years ago where an unsuspecting passenger had drugs inserted into their checked luggage. By chance, the culprit was caught on camera. Still very scary.

I also do not understand the negative view that so many Dominicans have of their own Country. I know a lot Dominicans from all kind of social background and education that have a great life here and make a lot of $. This Country is loaded with Opportunities and there are hardly any regulations. Here you can make $ with everything, everywhere. You only need discipline and motivation. I think that many Dominicans that live abroad also are the leading cause why so many Locals here want to leave, by telling fairy tales about how great they are doing in the US while living 6 together in a Basement.

It’s been years since I flew out of PUJ. I remember checking in, going for a coffee and sitting at a table where you were separated from aircraft by a waist high concrete wall. You could literally almost reach out and touch the nose of the aircraft. That must have changed by now. If not, I can see how easily the two kids snuck into the wheel well.

Like hypothermia. If the aircraft took more than 20 minutes to climb to cruising altitude, hypothermia was probably already setting in and the hypoxia did the rest. Temps can reach -50 at cruising altitude. Yet some people still survive the trip. Amazing!

100% I agree.

I think there's a lot to be said here. I think it probably happened early 2000's. I often think about it. Imagine you have a cousin who calls and tells you he's making 2000-3000 in new york. 120,000 pesos is a lot of money to most folks but they do not understand the cost of living in NY. There's a huge disconnect there.

Why is everyone talking about security at PUJ when the flight originated from POP, Puerto Plata airport?

I cannot imagine how sad these boys' mothers must be feeling. One of my good friends in DR got trafficked to France recently, sold the dream of a new life and effectively forced into slavery. I have managed to get him freed (although at a high cost). He made a really stupid decision and could have paid with his life. We all sometimes make stupid decisions, and in my opinion when other people do it's not all that helpful to laugh at them or call them stupid. I'm pleased I was able to help him.

They made stupid decisions but we should not call them stupid? I call them stupid Darwin Awards contestants. I like to call things like they are.
Selling oneself into slavery versus hiding in wheel wells is quite the incongruent comparison.

For those familiar with the mechanics of such aircraft, I know there are a few on DR1, could their frozen dead bodies in that landing gear area damage the landing gear in any any way to jeopardize the lives of others on the plane when it landed?

Knowing some Rich Dominicans does not change the reality of the average Dominican, that is why.

The average salary in the DR is 20,000 DOP monthly. Could you live well on that?

How about another estimate of about $5K USD per year as the average salary here?

Hopefully that explains way Dominicans hide in wheel wells, take yolas to Puerto Rico, cross the Rio Grande or overstay visitors visas when they can get them to be in the USofA.

Ok my point was that two children have died here because they made a stupid decision. I don't think it is appropriate to make disparaging comments about them. They didn't benefit from a first-world education, they were almost certainly born into poverty with not great chances to do much with their lives.

A lot of this stuff goes on on social media these days. Young people are targeted on TikTok by people driving fast cars, living in flashy apartments, saying if they want to come to the US / Europe / wherever just send them a DM. And that's how the trafficking starts. Girls are forced into prostitution, guys are forced into slavery in some types of production lines. It's huge huge business for these gangs.

Exactly ! It's really becoming a epidemic. Only yesterday i was contacted by a female friend of mine that ask for advise and almost fell into a trap like this. They even setup personal meetings (mostly in Bavaro) to gain more credibility.

If others don't learn from their stupidity, did they not die in vain?

Europeans have been using this business model for years. Only there the police are not allowed to question them.

I've had two friends it happened to. One was trafficked to France, the other to Mexico. The one in Mexico saw someone executed in front of him for not following instructions. His uncle's ex-wife's sister was involved, so there was a family connection which got his trust. Seriously scary stuff.

Learning from them is one thing. Having an attitude of saying "Ha ha these guys are completely dumb" is something entirely different.
In the good old times, when somebody was completely dumb, you could call him completely dumb ! Today there are no idiots or dumb people anymore. All of them are victims of something or somebody. When i was at their age i did so many stupid and reckless things, it's a true wonder I'm still alive. Believe me, i was no victim of anybody or anything. I was just a dumb idiot. So were this 2 Kids !
