The Ministry of Environment took action and backed the evicting of hundreds of squatters in a protected area in Santo Domingo East. Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera said he will be taking several people to court for the invasion. Twelve persons were arrested and 43 families evicted. 153 improvised dwellings were dismantled in an area of 2.6 km of protected area near the Quinto Centenario Horse Race Track. He said the settlement was a business of persons with ties to the past government.
Jorge Mera said the eviction respected the legal procedures. The eviction was carried out in coordination with the National Service for Environmental Protection (Senpa), the city government of Santo Domingo East, the Specialized Environmental Prosecution Agency, National Police, and the National Child and Adolescent Agency (Conani).
