I am trying to send $ to my son's family in Haiti. Much of it is for Christmas. It includes mom, 2 bros, and 1 sis. Total is $473 with fee which is $460 before fees. This comes out to about 60k gourdes (HTG). Twice now the sis, Nahomi, has taken a tap-tap to Thiotte which is over an hour away from her home, only to be told they don't have the money.

The incredulity for this country just reached another height.

To be honest it doesn't surprise me they do not have the money. Is there another way to get them money? I would assume family members outside of Haiti are trying to send money to family.

There is another way and Kenson is going to have to do it. If that doesn't work, then when he goes to see his mom next month he can take cash. It's just that for a WU not to have $500 is amazing.

I would assume the same, so I would think the cash situation might differ from branch to branch?

Stupid question in general: Where does WU normally procure the cash they hand out? I mean, banks do receive also cash payments/deposits, cash that they can then hand out as withdrawals, and I'd imagine that a number of WU transactions within the country (let it be DR or Haiti, irrelevant really) are also paid in cash in their branches, but do they need to procure cash also from other sources? People must be living off of some cash in Haiti as well, so there must be some available?

I'm not surprised the country may be the worst country in the world...
Might be close given the instability, but even when completely stable it still ranks as one of the world’s least developed countries and the only one in the Western Hemisphere that “makes it to that category.” If the DR was bordering any other country in the hemisphere, even poorer ones that are much poorer than the DR yet, are still quite ahead of Haiti, it would border a much more developed country. In fact, this is something noticeable by looking at how looks their richest and most developed cities. Managua’s best neighborhoods wouldn’t be confused with Port-au-Prince and that is for a reason and taking into account Nicaragua in general isn’t going anywhere with those that couple in power.

I wonder with what other countries Western Union has issues with the amounts of cash it can send?
