I had a friend who stayed at Playa Dorada for a bit over a year. He decided it was the cheapest way to go in the DR instead of buying groceries and cooking and paying rent and luz and everything. $950 is what he paid, but No Chicas!

Atta Boy, DOC.... using the old noodle..

Food , service, luz,
I expect the staff might take a shine to you after a while....

Back before automobiles, I lived in FLL at the marina Bay Club for a few months before moving to FL.
Got quite friendly with the staff...most people just pass through.

I know you are old WW, but even my daddy didn't live back before automobiles, nor my grandfather. We have pics of him driving his truck delivering milk long before you or I were born.

I spent 3 weeks in the area of Los Angeles and San Diego Californicate. Wind blew all day every day we got sand blasted walking on the beach. Probably 65degrees! I wouldn't give a used dog turd for Southern Cal.

Like I said, much better weather than the DR.

What about the rest?

I break it down this way
1) 1300 rent thats get you a beautiful place with security
2) 500 food monthly
3) 300 luz monthly
4) 100 Cable
Total 2200

leaves you $2800 for entertinment and beach and good times taxis

I think that a very good life doing what every the hell he wants.....his money will go alot futher here than in usa and he will have more fun...............:D

The Danger is the Casino's and the chica's

Cell phone, cleaning service, car and health insurance, car gas and maybe car monthly payment ?

NOT the point, what about emergency medical coverage? Not like if he has a heart attack he will book a flight and get treated stateside.

5 K a month in So Cal.....ahhhh OK , you might be able to rent a room in la Jolla for 1800 a month

The same thing applies in DR. I have clients who live or have lived in the Usual Suspect places (Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Santiago, Las Terrenas, Cabarete/Sosua, etc.,) and do just fine, thank you, on 5k a month after taxes. No, they won't be next to Vin Diesel's villa in Casa de Campo, but they will get a nice condo, have all their reasonable food and drink expenses covered, get cable and internet that's as good as is typical in their area, and live in relative air conditioned comfort.

Excessive booze/chica/sanky/whatever expenses are generally what jams up a person's budget. Funny, we had a running thread for years where it was argued, by people who live there on a full or substantial time basis, that $2,500 was enough. Now, 5k is a so-called "struggle."

Interesting.

Well, yes, but that's La Jolla. It's one of the most expensive parts of one of the most expensive towns in California, likely the priciest state in the union. You can enjoy a very comfortable life for 5k in Long Beach or Irvine, or basically anywhere in San Diego that's not in La Jolla.

5k is not a struggle (when single or couple with no kids) but it's not living like a king. With a family like mine 5k is a struggle and that's without booze/chica etc.
