This thread was probably asked before but most of the responses are 3 years old. Things change. How long does the process take to get residency in DR for or a visa for 6-12 months?
Here is what I already know.
You can renew a tourist visa for 60 or 90 days once you are there.
You need to begin the process for residency while outside DR
You could just pay the fine upon leaving if you overstay the 30 day tourist visa
The Dominican Consulate website list tourist visas and rentier visas but other than that
,the links to requirements on the site do not work .Pretty worth less

If it's really max. 12 month with no plan to stay longer.
OVERSTAY and pay the fine upon exit.
Piece of cake and want affect any future visits.
If you want to be 100% on the save side. Go every 3 month to the nearest airport and pay the late fee.
With the receipt you want be bothered if any official should ever check you.

If you don't plan on staying more than a year don't bother with residency. It's expensive and really too much of a hassle.
I am due to renew mine but this will be the absolute last time.
If I am still in DR in 2 years please shoot me

Can you just pay the late fee at the airport and get a new tourist visa in your passport? I thought you had to actually leave the country and return. I know several people who would just go to the airport every three months if they could then drive legally and do things like open bank accounts.

It is not supposed to work like that, but hey , this is the DR and someone might actually have done that.
But I doubt it.

Driving legally is only valid for 30 days even if you "extend" your stay to 120 days. Different government agency and different regulations on driving are separate from paying the overstay ahead of time on tourist cards.

For those who think overstays can be extended indefinitely by using the extend feature repeatedly at the Migracion web site, any proof of that?

If you are from a tourist card country you enter on a 30 day tourist card. The visa you describe does not apply for those from tourist card countries.

No, you can not, You are sill on a expired Visa but you don't owe the late fee. A friend of mine does this all,the time. The receipt is good enough for any control. He even uses Public Transport from the south to SD and they never bugged him after showing the receipt.

my friend does it at sdq but it should be doable everywhere (i guess)
BUT again: he does it only because he travels a lot to the south and back by Caribetours and they check quite a lot (even gringos).
For any regular Guy i stick with: "just overstay and Pay upon exit". I know plenty of foreigners that sometimes overstay for years.
Same applies for Driving with foreign License ! JUST DON'T KILL ANYBODY BECAUSE THAN YOUR LIVE WILL BE OVER !!!

A Gringo killing someone while driving here will get the same result whether he has Residency with a DR License or driving while Overstaying with a foreign license. As they say in Monopoly “Go straight to jail”……Money will do the talking, and a lot of it…………

The reason I asked was because I was refused boarding at Caribetours Dajabon by migracion because I have been here almost 5 years without leaving or paying the fine. Living in Boca Chica, it would be so much easier to go to the airport every 89 days and pay the fine. I'm leaving this Thursday for Panama so that I can get legal, but it's costing me a couple grand. So I'd much prefer just going to SDQ and doing it your friend's way.

Would you mind asking him if I can contact him?
