Metereologist Jean Suriel reported temperatures of 7.6 below zero Celsius (18.3 F) in the Valle Nuevo mountain location in central La Vega. Valle Nuevo (Constanza) is a popular area for camping in the Central Mountain Range.
Suriel said on Twitter that the low temperature was registered at 6:20am on 14 December 2022. This is the lowest temperature registered in the Dominican Republic so far this year. The previous record for the year was -6°C was recorded at the end of January.
Polar air is blowing in from the North and has been affecting the Dominican Republic for the past two weeks. “It froze water left in a dish outdoors, vegetation and tents were covered with frost,” said the weather expert.
