ASOCOBAS, ASOCOPEC, SICHOGLU, SICHOTUARI, etc, etc . . .

These guys love their acronyms. Deciphering the alphabet soup listing of associations is like reading two adolescent's Facebook chats about the new kid in 3rd period math class. I mean WTF, LOL, LMAO, ROTFL, ROTFLMAO, . . . I digress.

Having attended most of the meetings recently held by these groups (by obligation, not personal choice) and as others have posted here, witnessing the same behavior at each and every one, if they ever actually do some sort of an organized protest, it will fall on deaf ears. Except for the ubiquitous coverage by "sosuanews" and "Detras del Rumor" it will do nothing more than satisfy their own need to hear themselves speak. Just look at the listing in the article of nine separate associations and the mention of more. All these associations represent mostly the same group of people, many of whom belong to all the associations mentioned.

One other fact that is usually not mentioned is that they only represent a small minority of the total population of Sos?a's approximately 70,000 inhabitants. Since they are mostly based around Pedro Clisante they garner a disproportionate amount of "media" attention. It's doubtful that their members and planned protests will have much of an impact on the overall future of Sos?a. Unless they organize and address the issues in a different manner they shouldn't expect much change.

They have discussed several dates for protests at the different meetings including the date mentioned in the article of August 2nd, which has come and gone. They also suggested August 10, also passed. Let's see what date they come up with next.

I think there are more like 80,000 people in Sosua according to a recent census. I would guess that the peaceful protest by these organizations will have zero effect on the closing times, indeed falling on deaf ears. .

I'll be real surprised if this law in it's current form is still in effect a year from now. My bet is they will issue some kind of exemption for bars and clubs within a "tourist zone" or for bars/clubs with "X" number of seats or capacity - something like that. Time will tell.

I doubt the law itself will change. The law being used is one that allows authorities to set closing times as they see fit.

If the authorities decide to change the hours of operation, they can do so. With a new Attorney General just taking office, time will indeed tell. It has been stated that he is also interested in urban renewal leading to more tourism.

Exactly. The basic law itself will not change. When, where, and how it will be applied in Sosua might.

I was hanging with 2 Canadian couples last night. They are leaving today and said they were never coming back. They said they did not go on vacation to end their night at 12am.

OK, but every tourist that is here is a tourist that has decided to not go anywhere else for that particular vacation!

I guess they forgot to buy booze at a store and stay up drinking where they are staying?

Der Fish

Local businesses want tourists to enjoy themselves and go home planning their next trip back. They don't want them to come once, not enjoy it and then go somewhere else in the future.
There is lots of competition for tourist dollars.
