CB, I sit here reading yours and the others post wishing to be in your shoes, congratulations on your move and the best of luck!!!!

I was born in the DR and moved to Canada at 20,,,, today I can't see my 19 year old making the move I made back then,,,, she is a kid,,, and so was I. I became a woman in Canada, and learn that 5:00 does not means 5:15 so for me coming back to the DR was a shock, learning to deal with the regular "sinverguenza" was a challenge, not that we don't have them in Canada, but here people are usually reliable. Without notice I became Canadian, in the way I think, what I expect from services and life in general. In 2003 out of my 52 weeks of maternity leave for my unexpected third child, I spent about 40 in the DR, trying to get the feel of living the DR life like eveyone else around me,, not the vacation style of AI we did on every trip back and that was when we decided to build the house.

Believe it or not,,, It was my plan to be home by now, we started building the dream home in JD but life had other plans, my husband fell ill with cancer (in remision now!!!!!) and building while not being there is not the smartest move either,,,, so the house is on hold, but I am still dreaming I got hooked on those 40 weeks.

We come down 3-4 times a year and everytime we stay longer, but I don't think I am ready yet to leave my home in TO, yes, Canada is home but I still get embarresed when Dominicans misbehave and are crucified for it, Canada is home but the DR will always be my "Patria", I owe Canada for embracing me and the oportunites I had, and I want to offer that to my children, at least not until my older children graduate from Univeristy which would mean 3 to 4 more years, however I am ready to spend 6-7 months at a time.

I admire your decision and your outlook in life,,I gather from HB, BB, Rocky and others,,, if U plan for too long,,,, something will always get in the way.

There is never a better time to be happy then now, close your eyes and in 20 years you will be the one telling your old "Moving to the DR story".

Good luck... as I sit here dying of envy!!!!!

CB;)

Your longing to be here is palpable. You bridge the 2 cultures - any chance you could continue your working life down here by setting up retirement facilities for all the N.American baby boomers? There's going to be a huge market in a few years for sheltered facilities: home care aids, nursing expertise, occupational therapy etc etc & it'll take a Dominican who has lived abroad a long time to do it successfully, not a foreign expat. Just a thought.
