COmparing Manny to A.Rod is a joke. Manny is a hitter. AROD is the best player in Baseball!thick_neck said:(If golo were here, he would say that "Manny is a Dom-York chopo and his English is poor," and that "A-Rod has better taste in clothes." Tony Clich? would say that neither Manny nor A-Rod can compare to Raffy Palmeiro, and that "ALL Dominicans are chopos")

How about a real Dominican, Vlad Guerrero.
He, - more so than either Planet Manny or A-RodInc., typifies to me, a Dominican baseball player. He's the Jerry West of the Dominican Baseball Branding. He swings at everything and kills most of it. No batting gloves, no armbands, no elbow pads, no english, and not really much of a clue. He just hacks!
This is a guy, who at 28, still lives with his mom - how much more Dominican can you get?
I recently had the pleasure of seeing him (pre-game) take batting practice and it was as funny as it was impressive. He hit two balls that bounced in the dirt before the plate during his session (not out of the ordinary - "they" say).
He literally will swing at anything. I think he starts his swing in the dugout.
His first time facing a knuckleballer that night, he struck out on just a few pitches and looked horrible. Next time up he hits a 410 foot moonshot for a HR.
Just on a quick count (unofficial off ESPN) I come up with 90 players from the DR, 25 or so hailing from the capital. In one word: RIDICULOUS!
Is there any equal? A place in the world that can match that type of concentrated talent, in any sport.
Word is born. :speechles
(And be careful, if it's sports related and not about Robert's beloved Crickit and Futbol, then it will be tea-time for the thread and it will get tossed into the barrel full of monkeys. Jolly good mate!)![]()
Manuel and Alex are totally different, Manny cares only about his numbers and himself, Alex cares about him, his teamates and his ballclub on and off the field. Which one sells more tickets?, no question, Alex because he is just a fan favorite and because the way he is (and it helps alot that the man can carry a inteligent conversation). I can care less that Manny is dominican. I am a baseball fan and just because he is dominican does not mean that I HAVE to root for him. I rather root for John Olerud (a nice guy). Great ball player but could be much better accepted by his peers and fans if he would just lose THAT attitude.thick_neck said:Have you noticed that the word 'class' is always attached to players who lack Spanish accents? With a few exceptions, that is.
PRican great Roberto Clemente was called "classy" after his death; Tony P?rez and Tony Pe?a after their playing days were over; and PRican phenom Carlos Beltr?n was called 'classy' by the Houston press after he hit a pair of HRs last week. But what if he had struck out three times, and with the bases loaded?
Rarely has the word 'class' been associated with Latin players while they were active.
Beginning with Ju?n Marichal, and continuing with Manny, Dominican ballplayers have always been called "hot dogs" by the press, but never "classy."
Okay, Tony Clich?, you can chime in now.
Go Reds!!
