I noticed a few days ago the doors for Hotel Mercedes were open and a work crew had
brought in some industrial dehumidifiers so they can dry out the interior and start cleaning.
Here is an interesting article about what they plan to do with the building.

Hotel Mercedes in Santiago will be a cultural center and an art museum.
The Hotel Mercedes will be converted into a cultural center and an art museum to preserve historical and cultural elements of the country.

Good news! I'm guessing it really doesn't need that much of an investment to bring it back to life again.

Here in Santiago you we can add Hotel Mercedes on Calle 30 de Marzo to this list as well.
I snuck in there and snapped some pictures from the ground floor a few years ago.

That's so sad that it closed. We stayed there 5 years ago when we renewed our residency. It was really in need of a reno but I love old historic hotels.
We stayed in the second floor corner balcony room. Very entertaining watching the night life.

Edificio Morey, a beautiful 1930s building in San Pedro de Macoris is being “restored” to create a hotel. They took out all the original (some even intact) stained glass windows from the turret.
My bet is that someone with really bad taste will be responsible for design and will destroy any historical integrity. But at least it isn’t being demolished.

Built in 1915 not 1930.

I had know idea it was open then.
Been living in Santiago for 7 and half years and was always closed when I pass by. I'm looking forward to the renovations which (according to local press) will have a nice roof top view for patrons.

It sure looks like the hotel we stayed in but looking at the pictures again we might have stayed in it's twin. It was in the colonial district and years ago there was a Hard Rock bar a few doors down.

Luperon Beach and Luperon Tropical resorts closed about 15 years ago.
We stayed there in 2001, our first trip to the DR, got married there in 2005. We visit Luperon once a year on our anniversary. Sad to see the buildings slowly being reclaimed by nature.
We now live in Costambar, there's a hotel here that shut down several decades ago, it's past being revitalized, could only be knocked down.

As promised here are a few recent pictures of the on going renovations/ restoration taking place at Hotel Mercedes on 30 de Marzo here in Santiago.

Not sure why and I didn't bother asking but when I asked the "watchie man" if I it was ok for me to step inside and snap a few pictures his posture changed and he asked me, in a not so friendly tone of voice, who I was working for?
Anyways... enjoy.
