President Luis Abinader in his 27 February 2025 state of the nation and review of 2024 spoke of advances to improve energy service, so important for development. Abinader said the transformation of the energy matrix is a reality and is constantly expanding. He highlighted that while in 2020, the renewable generation capacity was of 555 megawatts. Today, 2024, it has more than doubled to around 1,396 megawatts.

“This growth allows us to move towards the goal of sourcing 25% of our energy from clean sources, with the commitment to double the present generation capacity by 2028,” he said

Abinader spoke of the recent historic milestone whereby in February 2025, more than 50% of the energy in the grid came from renewable sources, demonstrating that the Dominican Republic is progressing towards a sustainable and reliable energy model. “At the same time, we continue to...

We already discredited the 50% of grid from renewables talking point that happened for one moment in time and not on a general basis.

All energy needs a 100% non-renewable back up , so the only option in the DR is to build more fossil fuel power plants
as the country grows. People seem to miss this little detail when they scream about renewables.

He should have said "The EDE's are over. Everyone must pay for electricity"..

Having more renewable electricity is good in my book. But what the country needs is a working rid system, so that large areas are not blacked out every time there is one small problem, or trees need to be cut.

renewable energy is a political party. It will not push an elevator to the top floor or push an HVAC system or a freezer.

Of course renewable can be a good thing. But it is far from a replacement for traditional power sources that rely on fossil fuels for developing nations like the DR.

No doubt that widespread outages that happen when cutting trees back should be limited to much smaller regions. They have not planned for that redundancy so we all suffer in a much wider region than necessary. Mostly on Tuesdays these days.

Better yet, we have so much megawatts power and still, we have blackouts? Something is wrong right there.
