Abinader sees DR entering the microchip world

President Luis Abinader indeed has a very expansive worldview. Much like former President Leonel Fernandez back in the late 1990s, when the latter proposed to turn Santo Domingo into “a little New York” and proceeded to build the Santo Domingo Metro system, now Luis Abinader wants the Dominican Republic to become a player in the world of semiconductors or microchips.

At the start of the computer industry, the US had 100% of the manufacturing capacity of semiconductors. Today that capacity is now 8% after the US outsourced the manufacturing of microchips used in computers and electronics to Asia. Upwards of 80% of computer chips and electronics are manufactured in South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Japan. Germany and Israel have small shares of the industry.

Enter nearshoring and friendshoring. The Dominican Republic has the potential to combine both. The DR offers the best of...

Totally agree ! The Germans are trying to make chips for the last 20 years and hardly manage. Can somebody please tell abinader that the election campaign is over and there is no more need for BS statements and promises. What's next ? .... manufacturing airplanes !?

That's totally true. Dominicans are known all over the world for there punctuality and precision. Only a few rumors that the DR will soon start making precision watches caused the Swiss Stock market to tumble. Further proof is that almost 80% of all Nasa Employees are from the DR and more than 90% of Starlink Employees as well. Guys get serious please. We do live in the best country on earth by far but you do not have to swallow every pill that comes from a government spokesman. Would there be a ranking for the 10 last suitable Countries for Chip Production, the DR would easily make it on this list.

He lives in his own pink colored bubble where only resorts and golf clubs exist in DR, and there's nothing in between them, so the only thing DR needs is some monorail trains to run between those places, and maybe some bicycle lanes (they have them in other countries, so probably DR needs them too, right?). But you can't blame him for that, born super rich, he inherited everything from his father ... Remember when he and his team started to take pictures with shovels every time they start another project? You could notice that he has no idea how to hold a shovel.

Many Dominicans don’t give it a second thought to throwing litter and garbage in public open air places, but you will be hardpressed to find a Dominican with a dirty house.

I think the focus is on Costa Rica as it has become the leader in manufacturing chips in the Central America/Caribbean region. Without the Dominican government getting involved in incentivizing and/or promoting the development of the field, the DR has already seen much growth in the manufacturing and export of chips. Now that the government appears to be supporting (or beginning to support) that sector, more growth in that is expected.

This has to be a joke. Microchips? Really?

Believe it or not, the same was said about developing tourism in the DR back in the 1960’s and even 1970’s. The thought the DR was going to become a tourism powerhouse in the Caribbean would had been seen as wishful thinking back then. Things like constant blackouts, constant water shortages, the garbage thrown in the streets among other things as recent as the 1970’s were already a problem (many have become worse) were some of the reasons people said tourism will never amount to anything in the DR. These were things that other popular tourists spots in the Caribbean such as nearby Puerto Rico wasn’t much or at all affected by them. Then there were people like Frank Rainieri who was “wasting” his life on attracting tourists to a mosquito infested and devoid of all development Punta Cana. Many people actually felt bad for him thinking he was after something that would never happen. Even worse was that basically no one was educated on hospitality, which is essential to having a successful touriem industry since a major part of that are hotels, resorts and restaurants.

Tourism in the DR was a waste of time. It’s 2024 and oh wait, what happened?
