On Sunday, 11 August 2024, President Luis Abinader took his first ride on the Santiago monorail, one of the major infrastructure projects of his administration. This was a short test run, the first dynamic test of the system.
The mass transit system also includes a cable car system that will feed the monorail from the densely populated areas south of the Yaque River in the second-largest city. Some of the routes of the popular cars known as “conchos” are being modified to serve as “feeders” to the new system.
