Air Canada has just announced the renewal of flights to the Dominican Republic starting on 26 June 2021. This is just in time for the peak of summertime travel.

Spokespeople for the airline congratulated the Dominican government authorities for the tourism industry’s performance and the reactivating of the major tourist areas. The airline is especially interested in resuming its flights to Puerto Plata, Samana and Punta Cana.

The Canadian announcement comes when the US State Department is advising US citizens not to travel to most countries around the world, including the Dominican Republic. Germany, on the contrary, is encouraging its citizens to vacation in the Dominican Republic.

Air Canada and other travel companies have no say on when they are able to fly until the Canadian government tells them to. Travel from the Caribbean into Canada is still not available.

True, it is up to the government in Canada. Any date put forth by the airlines is wishful thinking.

I doubt that this info is correct, especially in regard to POP and AZS
The first flights to resume will be to PUJ because of volume.
Flight schedules can be amended at any time, no guarantees.
One can check what is possible to book right now, departures are not guaranteed.

WS accepted bookings to POP for July a few days ago, which are now cancelled.
First flights showing now are August 6, no guarantee.

Canadian travel regulations are completely arbitrary.
How can US, EU, China, Korea arrivals be allowed and no DR travel for Can citizens and Residents (PR)

If you look back at when this nonsense started the airlines agreed to suspend flights to the Caribbean and Mexico. It was not a law or an order from the Fed's it was a mutually agreed on decision. It was supposed to expire April 19 but was extended to May 21 due to the crying and moaning from the Ontario and Quebec premiers.

I am still hopeful that after May 21 flights can resume if the airlines choose to do so.

Lobo:
Where are Canadian airlines flying to at the moment? Give us the list.
No flights to the DR.

Canadian travel pertains to DR arrivals and departures.
Much of this travel is for business and family reasons, asides from the AI vacation segment.
WS has been the best provider for flights to POP throughout the whole year, prior to covid with continuous regular service.
AC is focused on tourist segment.

The info pertaining to the lack of Canadian air travel is available in print and TV media and well documented, as well as the decline of flight volumes.

Canadian air travel is down right now 90% from 2019 levels, destinations and flights are very limited.
US air travel is back to 70-80% of 2019 travel.

The Canadian government has no plan at the moment to re-start air travel.
The government hope is the arrivals of more vaccines and more vaccinations to facilitate a re-start of Canadian air travel.

Quote:
"The NACC notes that Canada’s aviation sector has called on the federal government for months to develop a safe restart strategy that outlines the metrics that must be met to begin addressing border and travel restrictions.
Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau called on the federal government to put an end to the hotel quarantine requirement, and to develop a reopening plan for international travel.

“The current mandatory hotel quarantine for arrivals has proven ineffective. It should be eliminated,” said Rousseau.
He said Air Canada expects domestic travel will lead its recovery.

Rousseau and Guillemette said Air Canada is seeing strong demand through next winter to Mexico, the D.R., Hawaii and Florida as Canadians anticipate their first post-pandemic holiday.
Air Canada isn’t the only airline to call for the end of the hotel quarantine rule. WestJet has also made the same request to the federal government.

Air Canada announced its $5.9 billion deal with the federal government for federal aid last month. Demand for refunds is slower than expected despite reaching out to customers proactively, says the airline.

Last week Air Canada reported a Q1 loss of $1.3 billion. Revenue in the quarter totalled $729 million, down from $3.7 billion in the first three months of 2020.

Capacity was down 82.1% compared with a year ago, while traffic was down 89.5%. Air Canada plans to almost double its Q2 capacity from the same quarter in 2020, but says compared with the same period in 2019 that Q2 capacity is expected to be down 84%.

Earlier this year the federal government secured agreements from Air Canada as well as WestJet, Sunwing and Transat to cancel winter sun flights until April 30. Air Canada stuck with its plan to offer just three sun destinations in May 2021 (Bridgetown, Kingston and Mexico City), and those flights are geared to essential workers and cargo.

The federal government has extended Canada’s travel restrictions until at least May 21. Last month Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick told Travelweek: “Air Canada will extend its suspension of Sun flying throughout May. We will continue to operate some flights to Mexico City, Barbados, and Kingston, but these would not carry passengers south. Instead, they will provide essential services, for example carrying cargo and in some cases on northbound flights, temporary foreign workers and Canadians currently abroad. We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our network as appropriate, as well as work with the government to develop a safe reopening plan and restore travel.”

Air Canada called on Ottawa to ease travel restrictions as the airline, which reported a first-quarter loss of $1.3 billion, plans for its post pandemic recovery.

The country’s largest airline also said it is seeing strong demand through next winter to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Hawaii and Florida as Canadians anticipate their first post-pandemic holiday.

“The current mandatory hotel quarantine for arrivals has proven ineffective. It should be eliminated,” Michael Rousseau said Friday in his first quarterly conference call since becoming CEO.

Rousseau said the government must develop and communicate a reopening plan as it is cautiously optimistic that the country is nearing an “inflection point” with the vaccination rate rising in the middle of a difficult third wave.

“After over 14 months of restrictions, Canadians, who we know are eager to travel, want and deserve clear guidelines. They want to know when they will be able to travel internationally again and under what protocols.”

“Our near-term caution is rooted in our belief that the Canadian government-imposed air travel restrictions are not set to be materially eased in time to salvage much of the upcoming peak summer travel period,” he wrote in a report.

Last month, Air Canada reached a deal for $5.9 billion in federal aid including money earmarked to help refund customers.

Revenue in the quarter totalled $729 million, down from $3.7 billion in the first three months of 2020.

Air Canada said its capacity as measured in available seat miles was down 82.1 per cent compared with a year ago, while traffic measured in revenue passenger miles was down 89.5 per cent.

The airline plans to approximately double its second quarter capacity from the same quarter in 2020, but says compared with the same period in 2019 that second quarter capacity is expected to be down 84 per cent.

Air canada has not announced anything . It was mentioned in an article in a meeting they had with the dominican ambassodor to canada , and told her that they hope to have flights returning to the DR by June 26th. NOT OFFICIAL . But as noted 6billion and Gov part owned , I say they must have an inside track. But not official till the other airlines work out their deals. Agree PUJ is AC's first destination , if airtransat gets off its feet , POP will be back in play. As for westjet , I'd rather board the SS minnow.
