In "Chinese", and other "Asian" countries, the children KNOW who their father is, because they see him Everyday, all day long!
He, along with their mother, make education the # one priority in the home, Everyday, all day long!!!!
The "Government" also makes education the # one priority, Everyday, all day long!
When it comes to Education here,"Lip Service" is the # one priority of the DR Government, Everyday, all day long!
Never forget, because the "Politicos" and the "Ricos" who rule this country NEVER WILL, "An uneducated work force, is a Cheap work force, and an Uneducated populace is an easy to manipulate electorate!
There is a incentive for them to keep the "Masses" ignorant & uneducated!
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

"Rubio" I did reread your post.
I was wrong.
I mistakenly thought you were referring to DR schools.
What country were you speaking about????

Then explained to me how Thailand is the number 1 place on the globe for "sex tourism" and a key player in child prostitution??? If Asian fathers are these great men who place a great deal of importance on education then tell me who fathered all these hookers in Thailand and other Asian countries????

I have watched and read many stories about Asian parents selling their children for money.

Also you believe education is China's #1 priority???? What a JOKE!!!!! China's NUMBER 1 priority is remaining a " Single Party State"

If there was every a country that treats its citizens like "pawns" China fits the bill by a long shot.

Comparing anything DR to China is like comparing the planet Jupiter to the state of Rhode Island. If anybody is controlled its China.

You are former military aren't you??? Go ask China how much money is spent on their military compared to education. Kind of blows up your "#1 on education statement"

absolutely correct, windeguy. my housekeeper's daughter has had a blackberry for the last 3 years, and just switched over to a Galaxy S4. i would never ask how she managed to get one, because she has no job which i know of, and the family is dirt poor. if i stop by their home to say hello, nobody can produce a pen, if one is needed. there is not a book in sight. it is a matter of priority. school is not high in the pecking order of human exertions, even at this girl's tender age. she was not raised to think it is. that is a common thread that runs through so much of the society.

i once passed by a school in a barrio, and there was a colmado beside it, with giant speakers blaring bachata during school hours. i have no idea how the kids could hear the teacher. in a society that valued education, the cops would have run the stereo equipment over by a bulldozer.

gorgon this is not fair. I remember you stating you attended Rutgers University or was it or was it Fordham University I know it was one of the two.

I know all about studying hard graduating with honors clich?, but what was the MOST IMPORTANT thing about college that some learn the hard way???? Making sure your TUITION and FINANCIAL AID papers where in order, because if they were not the school had NO problem saying BYE BYE!!! until we get paid no matter how good of a student you are.

What is the one thing the Dominican, businesses, government, families and people lack living in DR???? MONEY!!!!!!! Life is very expensive. No matter what short coming Dominicans face MONEY will always remain an underline problem.

There are almost NO CAREERS in DR, yet you think the youth should make school a priority????

BTW In 2014 NOBODY has a pen or pencil not just some people in DR. I was need a pen to divide some numbers and I ask my sister and she " OMG you can do that on your phone nobody carry a pen anymore"

that is a weak argument, JMB, and you know it. the actual amounts of money spent on the military, and on education, are not indicators of anything. you do know how many schools can be built with what it takes to put a fully equipped aircraft carrier in the water, right?

Have you ever spent a large amount of time in Costa Rica??? I will not say it but many people will make the argument Ticos are much better students and a much better trained work force then Dominicans.

Costa Rica spends ZERO dollars on a army because they do not have one, but I do not have a figure on what DR spends on their military but I bet it is more then ZERO.

Lets compare two similar countries CR and DR and leave places like China out of it. Why do you think it is very easy for a Tico to receive a visa to the USA then a Dominican???

When the army was abolished in the year of 1949 in Costa Rica it was said the army would be REPLACED with an army of teachers. A tico showed me this on the net when I was in San Jose once.

Why do you believe the two are not indicators of anything as you say, but the nation of Costa Rica believe the two are????

I will make this simple gorgon if you can tell me 3 things they will benefit the country of DR by spending money to train a soldier and then tell me 3 things that WILL NOT benefit Costa Rica by spending money to educate a student. I will go right now and jump in Lake Michigan.

BTW Where would Beyonc? and LeBron James be if they both had Asian parents who PUSHED education ALL DAY EVERY DAY like CC Asian buddies in the east.

ok, let's clear up a few little details. first, Fordham, not Rutgers. secondly, my masters was paid for by my company.

i agree with you in a lot of what you say. money is a problem getting a good education. but what is my housekeeper's daughter's excuse, given the fact that she goes to school every day? i also agree that it might just be resignation to the reality that they put out all this effort to graduate, but cannot get a job when they get a sheepskin, because they do not know the area political leader, or they do not have a hyphenated surname. those are the realities of the entire caribbean, but it does not stop a place like Barbados from getting stellar academic achievements.

wazzup wit dat?

I agree that more hours does not equal more education, it will eventually become watered down IMO.

Does a more developed nation means that mothers/fathers have to work all day just like the US? Back when there was an American Dream, 1 parent could work an the other stay with the kids, more family time. Now everyone is working all day just to make it and the kids are in the daycare from 3 months on... I would not like to see this happen to my country.

Yes, I believe some attempts are being made to improve what goes on within the school day, but as far as I know, it is all still in the discussion stages. I remember reading that committees and focus groups were being formed by the education ministry to discuss educational needs. Whether it ever moves from talk into action, only the future will tell.

All Dominican Republic schools to be full-day this year.

"Here in the coming year, we?re going to finish all schools that have been started and those which are about to begin" the President said during his surprise visits on Sundays, this time to towns of San Juan province (west).

Spent all of yesterday w/Architect/friend Elvis Hernandez Cedeno (shout out), who is directing construction of one (Otra Banda 1 is the temp name) of two school constructions in La Otra Banda. He confirms that government is moving up deadlines for project completions, what's more, they're producing the money necessary for completion.

I asked him how he won the contract and he replied that it was through a gov't lottery. That's 2 good gov't stories for the price of one.

The biggest problem in the USA, is that "Both Parents" are NOT WORKING!!!
"Baby Daddy" is GONE, and smoking "Crack Cocane", and "Baby Mami" is getting drunk on "Booze" she bought with her "EBC" card!

By the way "JMB" where did you go to school?
They should have taught you the difference between "Then", and "Than"!

My country?

There's no land as beautiful as mine,
bathed by the sea of white foam
that looks like the feathers of a white gull
asleep on the banks of the wide sea.
Quisqueya land of my love,
gentle breeze, beautiful flowers
A beloved pearl from the bottom of the seas
Quisqueya divine
In my songs quisqueya,
I compare thee with a star,
a solidarity star that brightens my life
and gives me her light

Exactly! Maybe it would be better if resources were spent on employing teachers that are actually qualified to teach before they expand the the hours of the school day. This article is from the January 16, 2014 Diario Libre which states that 59% of the teachers in the Dominican Republic are not qualified to teach:

El 59% de profesores del pa?s no calific? para ense?ar en las escuelas - Internacionales - Entorno Inteligente

i read an article somewhere which stated that there are college professors here who do not have a bachelor's degree....

I read an article some place which stated that the first institution of higher education in the western hemisphere was founded in the DR, but what does this have to do with increasing school hours?
