Aloft and Marriott hotels for Santo Domingo

President Luis Abinader and Tourism Minister David Collado were in Punta Cana on Thursday, 29 October for the announcement of the Latitud 18° Santo Domingo at the Hard Rock Punta Cana. Rodrigo Chapur, voice for the Mexican hotel group, Grupo RCD, announced two high rises of 20 floors each are part of the project set to go up on the corner of Av. Abraham Lincoln and Andres Julio Aybar street in Santo Domingo.

A 208 room Marriott Hotel would be built in one 20 floor building. The other would be an Aloft Hotel, another Marriott International brand and would have 192 rooms. The Aloft brand is most notable for its modern architectural design style.

The promoters say there will be four levels of underground parking. There will be a modern gym, three restaurants with terraces and a 2,000 m² meetings and events hall. The promoters announced an investment of US$70...

Normally I would agree with you. However on the north coast we have three proposed Marriott properties, the only that was near completion or open is in Sosua. The 2 additional ones in Cabarete have "issues". Government issues for the one at La Boca for the Ritz Carlton Reserve as well as the pandemic ones. Is any work being done at the W in Cabarete?

Chapur has been very positive on the DR (he and his company is based in Mexico City) after the success of the Hard Rock Resort in Punta Cana. When he built it, it was a Moon resort and didn't had much success, which being the largest hotel in the Caribbean that was a serious problem. Then he got the right to convert it into a Hard Rock, which became the first Hard Rock resort in the world, and the success was almost instant.

The Hard Rock Hotel planned for Santo Domingo was his based on the success of the Hard Rock Punta Cana. They dug the giant hole for the building, but before the structure could be built neighbors made a stink about the project. With lawsuits against Chapur's business, in the end the plan was scratched. Now on the same spot they plan to build the two hotels in the OP and as of now the neighbors haven't been as belligerent as with the Hard Rock. The HR had a casino and neighbors were worried about parking and the potential overflow into neighboring streets where right now finding parking spaces can be an issue.

The current design of the two towers is horrible compared to the spectacular and flashy design of the Hard Rock highrise.

I understand the position of the neighbors but I think the original design had a lot more going for it and would have been a lot bigger draw.

In any case the existing luxury hotels in SD are not suffering for lack of clients.

The two properties in Cabarete are stalled. One by legal issues at La Boca. So the amazing planning of the Marriott people is not always amazing.

Marriott does not build those hotels, Marriott just gives the license, which comes with inspections , training, brand etc. Like a regular franchise.

Therefore the planning, building etc is not part of their organization. The Cabarete and Santo Domingo hotel could be different organizations and operators.

Quite honestly, I'm not interested in those areas of discussion not concerning the subject of the OP. The Capital. Stay focused so that perhaps this thread will relate to OP placed in the news, and so that even this thread will not parse over to 300 pages of Sosua and whore mongers. The Capital.

I find it hard to believe that anyone anywhere is building a big hotel right now, and particularly in Santo Domingo when there are so many hotels and so much competition.

The reason is that people who purchase Marriott franchises are geniuses. Is that not obvious? Especially the ones in Santo Domingo.

The recently branded Marriott in Sosua is the former Gansevoort hotel/condo project. They put their name on an already existing resort. They built a new beach head.
