This very old news AA announced that they qould not be flying direct to NY from SDQ more than 3 months ago Delta now has a direct flight and at a much better time and Jet Blue has had the direct light for ages so no loss as AA have been getting worse and worse with their sydden cancelations

Yes, old news, OP was me - when I got the e-mail from AA in January. It just went into effect 2 weeks ago, on April 2nd. We HATE connections, which is why we've driven to JFK [almost 3 hours one way] rather than fly out of Atlantic City or Philly. We still have a LOT of AA miles. For direct flights to DR we'll probably use United out of Newark, or maybe US Air out of Philly. Spirit out of AC has nightmarish connections in Fort Lauderdale.

Well, we flew home to US on AA yesterday, re-routed through Miami after our direct flight into JFK was cancelled. We had a 6.05 am flight, which meant getting up at 3 am, leaving at 3.30 and getting to SDQ by 4ish. Everything in the airport [after immigration, we didn't go upstairs] was closed, no breakfast before the flight. Tight, cramped, uncomfortable full flight to Miami, very old plane.

I was ready for a nightmare in Miami. Was a ridiculously long walk from plane to immigration, then another haul to baggage, back through security again. I have a titanium hip, so big rigamarole each time, had to wait for a female agent for the pat-down. I wanted to ask if we were engaged afterwards, but she didn't seem to have a sense of humor so I shut up. Neither SDQ or MIA had the x-ray option like at JFK. I WAS shocked that there were no lines anywhere. 2 people ahead of us for immigration, no one ahead of us for security. I was told it was because we arrived a little after 8 am, that around 9.30 it gets crazy because all the international flights arrive.

Flight from MIA to JFK was a pleasure, upgraded to business class, comfy reclining seats with raised footrests.

We're done with AA until they merge completely with US Air and we can [hopefully] use up our AA miles on US Air non-stop from PHL to SDQ. Next trip will be later this year, United out of EWR.

This is a good flight... SDQ to PHL gets in at 5pm or so..... not sure about the southbound flight.

Yes, its a bit more money, but the convenience for us in PHL is worth it..... and no car parking.... taxi in / out

This is the worth please to live in the US for a Dominican man... I can't find a sheap way to DR for a weekend vacation.

Jet Blue will send me to make a connection in NY or Boston, Delta the same... American is no going to STI any more... RDU / PUJ is expency as hell.

What can I do?

I know! by the end of this year I should be living in Orlando, Ocala or tampa FL...

This will be challenge for this year.

Stop traveling so much. Enjoy your own hometown. Whatever is in the DR is also in your own hometowns. You just have to look for it. I could travel every day to the DR if I felt like it but I haven't been to the DR in over a year. If you are in the DR, stay put and put away the travel bags.

BTW, I am DOMINICAN!!! Life in Miami is great. It is just like living in the DR with all the amenities a 1ST world nation has to offer to all of its citizens. If you yearn for the DR, you are just a click away from DR1.

TRAVEL LESS and you will be LESS STRESSED!!!

I understand your sentiment... BUT... no palm trees in Pgh, (unless you count the fake ones at the Deck House "bamboo bar".)

No ocean in PGH, unless I drive 7-8 hours to the Jersey Shore. (no... not THAT "jersey shore"... the REAL Jersey Shore... south.

No PRESIDENTE in PGH... but we do have lots of other nice beers.

No Dominicans in PGH... there must be a FEW... but I haven't yet met them.

VERY LITTLE SUNSHINE in PGH. (although the weather man is making a liar out of me today... it's a beautiful early spring sunny day)

catchin' my drift yet??????

Hi, Bachata, I recently visited Orlando, but I am afraid I didn't try booking a flight to DR from there. I found some nice places to eat and some Dominican Clubs. I met a few Dominicanos there too, so its not so bad plus it has got to be some flight cheaper than flying from ny even if you just connect to Miami. oh, well, hope that counts for something? take care, God bless

I gave up already, my mother will have to go alone to enterview at the American consulate... hopefully everything is going to be ok, will use the budget for theses three days vaction in DR for doing some home repairs. My house's garage floor need some paint & I have some other projects in mind that can be perfomed in during this time.

I have my wife busy checking the Florida MLS to see if we find a good deal to invest in a secund home in the Orlando or Ocala area.

I really need to live one flight away from DR, miss my people and from here is so hard to make it down there!

Now Delta has 3 daily flights to SDQ and 4 to STI, Jetblue added also 2 more flights to JFK from SDQ and soon Gol Dominicana will start to operate flights to JFK from SDQ, so nothing to lose with that.

Lots to lose...Delta is the worse airline there is by far and usually the most expensive as well in my experience, but the worst thing is that since aa was the competition to Jetblue and Spirit you can expect those flights to go up in prices. Hopefully this Gol airlines will expand and provide some counter balance.

Alterego and others: If you travel frequently in and out of The Us please do yourself a favor and get a Global Entry card...The best 100 USD I've spent. Have saved me countless hours of waiting in line and headaches and its so nice when I get back into Miami, NY or some other airport and there's a long line I just walk up to the Kiosk and I'm through in a couple of minutes.
