The situation does seem odd. When they could have just robbed him, left him alive, and disappeared. I wouldn't assume that the police would work their hardest solve the case if it even got reported.

Either way, it is a tragic event when a man loses his life particularly when it is for nothing more than $1500, a cellphone, and some clothes.

If he was the 'novio' I am sure he could have gotten the 1500 USD.. Even a novice or bad sanky can get that money from any gringo/gringo who falls in love with the sanky.. No need to kill someone over that money.. i think it may depend on how it was done. spanish report says "funda de almohada" and "signos de estrangulamiento". i imagine what was used was not the pillow itself but a "bag" for the pillow. so just a piece of fabric. tied tightly around the neck it would cut blood flow to the brain and cause loss of consciousness. that effectively stops the victim from trying to loosen the noose. the actual death takes a while. this is why it is occasionally possible to save a person who tried to kill themselves by hanging, if one acts fast.

Glad to hear this. Kudos to the Policia Nacional for closing the case. I hope this sends a message to anyone thinking of trying to rob or harm tourists visiting Santo Domingo
