It is strange to me that everyone here is jumping onto the theory that they broke in just to steal his watch. There are plenty of people rolling around with expensive watches, and Lamborghinis and very expensive jewellery in DR. One of my mates sells very high-end jewellery, $20K and upwards per piece, and he is always overrun with work.

I think it's much more likely there is a chica / chico involved in this. Someone has got intimate with him, worked out he has a few dollars, maybe the guy hasn't paid them what they think they are worth, and boom. However this being an island, and Dominicans loving nothing more than a good old gossip, and LT being not a huge place, those watches will pitch up soon enough and someone will be caught and thrown in a very dark hole. We all know Mr Collado is pretty much running the show and anything at all that sours the reputation of this place for tourists causes an immediate and very strong reaction.

Otherwise intelligent people sometimes just don’t understand the danger or think it’s exaggerated. My own daughter argued with me when I told her to leave her diamond wedding rings home when coming down to our house. (Different story if you’re going to an AI and not leaving the resort)

RIP to Mr Oliver.
may I ask what zone you live in? I like to be aware

The article said several(varios) Rolex watches(plural) were stolen. Those are worth thousands of dollars each. No matter how you slice it or what may, or may not, have been going on, he would probably still be alive today if not for the watches.

A lot of theories and speculations so that you can explain away the main fact, here it is, the guy was killed...! If it was because of this or that somehow you can apply to your circumstances and feel safe, but the main point to take away is, poor safety a security level in DR , not good I am afraid ..., whoever was putting DR at number 3 in some list forgot to check safety for foreigners...!

I have three watches: a Guess $ 150. a Fossil $150. and a classic Casio $20. The last one is the one I wear when I am in DR.

Las Terrenas
The victim was a well-known L.A. club owner who ran Vertigo and Equinox. Both were iconic nightclubs in their day

I'm curious, where exactly was his villa in Las Ballenas?

You got stuff.
You show it.
You are old/young/middle aged/male/female.
You are alone.
You get hit.

The 🇩🇴 is not safe.
For anyone‼️
Unless you are running in a protective bubble.
And even then, if there is a security failure you are still dead (remember that minster that got seven caps popped in him while sitting in his government office).

I personally did not move to the 🇩🇴 to be safe.
But like another poster here I wear Casio and Timex.
I don't own a "cadena".
I keep displays of what little money I have (just a poor gringo negro here) to a minimum (nice clothes/shoes).
Stereotypes helps me out on that one.
I am certainly not talking about it to anyone.
A higher degree of safety is more likely to be found in the areas declared to be safer for tourists.
Get outside of those areas and you are a 🎯

I was just in my barbershop last week.
Topic of discussion: How much it costs to have someone killed in the 🇩🇴.

RIP to the victims of crime mentioned in this thread.
