it always pained me to see zona colonial as it is now... similar project was undertaken in my city (work in progress). the center is filled with old maison. originally housing one family of rich merchants per floor they were adapted to house the poorest of the poor after the war, large apartments divided to house several families. the government has provided current tenants with brand new apartments, slightly out of the city. some at low interest (if anyone wanted to buy), some at low rent. the buildings were renovated and then rented/sold to individuals and businesses. restored to a former glory, if you may. and the previous owners came out well on the deal: sometimes there'd be few families living in the same apartment (parents and their kids with their partners/kids) and they received separate apartments.

A lot of owners do not know what they are sitting on - just been inherited through generations... or maybe they are all just really clever and waiting for the right time to sell lol.

Its a bit harsh to take someones house off them if they cannot genuinely afford to 'bring it up to spec' with the governments new plan. Although I will be happy if they sort the house out next to mine - it is more of an eyesore than mine at the moment!

Anything is better to what is there now!

It will get much better! A lot!

It will be the best Coffee break place in the whole DR!

ha :) that's because ultimately everything in the country belongs to the government. traditionally the government here offers apartments in a barrio. there is power and running water, both subsidized. irregular but it's no worse than what they had before. and chris, it's not only about the looks, it's about the waste and danger. the buildings fall apart because they are very old. they need regular maintenance or thorough renovation. the walls fall down, the floors cave in. sooner or later the place becomes inhabitable. with the new project the current owners have a chance to live in a brand new building, with all amenities.
