Antonio Taveras resigns from “barrilito” fund

Senator Antonio Taveras Guzmán (Santo Domingo-PRM) became the first senator to formally reject receiving more than RD$1 million a month in extras. The Santo Domingo province senator Antonio Taveras Guzmán on Monday, 12 October 2020 officially resigned the perks. Taveras says he will not benefit from the “Social Compensation Fund.” He said he will concentrate on his role as a legislator. The fund grants around RD$1 million extra per month to the legislators for carrying out community work at their discretion. Taveras says he is also resigning to extras on holidays, such as Christmas, Three Kings Day, Mother’s Day, and others.

He recommended the money be allotted to a chapter that is used for legislative work until the new budget is passed.

Taveras said that the Social Compensation Fund has nothing to do with his responsibilities as a legislator.

Santo Domingo, RD.- Senators from different benches assure that the renunciation of the use of the Social Compensation Fund or “ Barrilito ” by some of the members of the seat, is a personal decision of each one.

Legislators Ramón Rogelio Genao and Franklin Rodríguez , from La Vega and San Cristóbal respectively, argue that what must be guaranteed is that the funds are used properly and with total transparency.

Meanwhile, the senator for the National District, Faride Raful , came out in front of the criticism she is receiving on social networks, in the sense that she collected more than a million and a half from the Barrilito fund.

On his Twitter account, Raful said: “our position is to redirect the resources of the #Barrilito to real needs in the #CongresoNacional. We are opposed to using these resources for our own welfare or welfare practices, that is not the role of the National Congress ”.

The issue has gained momentum after the senator of the province of Santo Domingo, Antonio Taveras Guzmán, renounced the use of the Barrilito.

Like Taveras Guzmán, the senator from Santiago, Eduardo Estrella, would renounce the possibility of accessing those resources.
