I know of many foreigners who have gotten STD's from partners both random and long term! I know of many locals who have STD's as well.

Many foreign women refuse to believe their man has a dominican wife or girlfriend - and I guarantee these women are messing around with someone else while "their" man is with the foreigner.

You can NEVER be too careful. Having unprotected sex here is a crapshoot!!! Sooner or later you will lose.

corsair74, I agree with your post. Barrios Chopas? Is that the pervasive transmitter of STDs? Perhaps? But how about the upper middle class "gentleman" that enjoys his "chopa" every once in awhile and goes back home and unknowingly infects his girlfriend? Actually STDs starts in highschool not in Sosua, where ALOT if not most teenagers practice unsae sex and "good" girls from "good" families love to mingle with their tigeres.
STD is part of the teen culture, which by the way, they view as harmless, while AIDS is considered a drug and cheap sex catch.

So you really can't get away from STDs, whether in a Barrio or in the universities of Santiago.

ake your measures to protect yourself but just by putting on a condom is not the end. There are disease far more dangerous than just contracting HIV virus. AZB

Can you elaborate a bit on these diseases that are more dangerous than HIV?

I always thought HIV was the king. I know there is hepatitis A, C, syphillis, herpes, etc.

But I always thought contracted HIV means, at some point in our life, you might get full blown AIDS, which to me means DEATH!!!!!!!!!

Condoms saves lives, period!!!!!

There you have it. HIV positive person can live for 20 yrs and not even know he is positive. Then there are arguments by many medical professionals and scientists that HIV has nothing to do with aids. They say if you get HIV and then start taking AZT then chances are you will distroy your immune system and kill yourself. AZT is a very strong medicine and side effects are devastating to the patient. But this is a whole new topic and very controversial.
Getting back to HIV vs other diseases:
You can have HIV for many many years yet you will not even feel the symptoms. Now Hepatitis B & C can cause liver failure (meaning, you die). So there is one example which will kill you a lot sooner than HIV/AIDS.

Yes the upper class can get STDs from chopas and infect their wives/gilrlfriends but there is a difference. The upper class men who cheat know very well that they have alot to lose if they catch a disease and transfer it to their spouse at home. Remember, the upper class people are very family oriented. So it seems the majority of couples who are still together and have a complete family at home are your upper class folks. They still practice family traditions. So when an upper class man takes a chopa to a motel, he makes sure he puts on a condom. He does not stick his tongue where it doesn't belong. Straight sex and the chopa is dumped near her house on a street and the man is gone. These guys just can't afford to catch a disease from a barrio girl becasue they would have a lot to lose from consequences if the wife catches something.
Now a barrio tigre who has nothing to lose and always drunk on a bottle of brugal can care less if he uses a condom or not.He doesn't plan on supporting the girl or the baby if she ever gets pregnant. He deosn't think about STDs when he is drunk and having sex with a barrio slut.
Now folks don't jump on me all at once.We are talking in general terms. My opinion is based on knowledge since 1986 till now. I have been coming to this island since 1986 and living here full time since 1998. I know what I am talking about.

AZB in general terms I agree with you!!!! Another piece of the logic puzzle is these people tend to be better educated and understand the consequences of their actions. Often the poor / barrio chopos, chopas tend not to understand the consequences. Their lives are mired in the right now, it won't happen to me, don't worry about tomorrow mentality.

AGAIN a generality but AZB is correct!

The same thing should be said about men. Funny how this conversation seems to revolve around the woman giving the STDs ;)

It needs to be said that if the person is ignorant enough to not want to use condoms, you might want to consider gettin off with someone else... ;)

Apart from the socio-economic reasons (we all know what they are) which lead people to not use condoms, THERE IS NO EXCUSE! As if it was complicated, ya slip it on and ya keep goin!

I don't think many folks would bang a chick he just met without a rubber :paranoid: What I am worried is getting a BJ without a condom because the risks are still there, but it kills the purpose of getting one.

and are we forgetting the prison population in this conversation ? i'm not sure of the stats in the DR but here in the US they account for spreading quite of bit of diseases from their prison affairs which includes drugs as well as sex.
you may not agree but i see sex diseases as most men are the drivers and most women are the passengers along for the ride. :ermm:
a working girl doesn't need a bad rep because it hurts business. a tigre, well, we've dicussed this already..

I just read about an senior citizen close to 90 who was looking for a puta [prostitute] with aids to have unprotected sex with. When ask why he replied he had heard you can live 20 years now after contacting aids.

Just a little levity to such a serious topic.

Hahahaha, you will be surprised how many guys in sosua are doing hookers without condoms. Not only they don't use condoms, they brag about putting their tongues in the wrong hole. Yes folks, these guys talk about anything and about everything.
So many guys have diseases and they don't even know it yet. Chlamydia often times has no symptoms and yet they are passing it to everyone. So guy if you feel a slight tingling feeling at the tip of your urethra (tip of the penis) whenever you pee or simply feel a slight dull pain, you may be on to something. Some symptoms are so dull and minute in nature that you confuse it for nothing at all. an itch on your penis, where the shaft and head meet, and see dry white skin or redness. You may have something too (yeast). If you have clear drip or cloudy Grey-white drip, or pain when you urinate etc. have yourselves checked. many symptoms go away after some time but the disease is still there.
You folks would be surprised to see so many guys and girls are infected yet they have no clue about it. HPV is very common here.
