I am in NYC and it is impossible to make a call for the last 2 weeks.
I'm trying to call and can't get through. Suppose it was an emergency?
What else could a person do.

I have been having trouble calling cell phones for the last month or so. Verizon seems to have the most luck, with Orange and Tricom having more problems.

Me too!

I have had troubles for at least a month. I put my phone on speaker and just keep hitting redial. Sometimes, one call after another, the result is different. Fast busy, dead air, "all circuits are busy", "the call cannot be connected as dialled". And then, out of nowhere, I will be connected. Sometimes when talking with my friend we will be disconnected mid-conversation (80% of the time really). When I attempt to call back right away, I will meet with all of those same problems. Frustrating, but worth it to keep trying. The lack of electricity doesn't seem to have any bearing on the calls. They get through or don't get through regardless of whether the electricity is on or not. I don't know what his cell service is, so that could be interesting to know.

I too am glad that it is not just me. Have you heard that it is equally as difficult to call out of La Romana? I think they may just get the busy signals, but I am curious to know your experience.

A better card?

17 cents a minutes is nuts .....thats like 58-59 minutes for $10 .... i use a 20/20 phone card and get 151 minutes for a cell phone for $10 ... and ive never had a problem connecting until recently

Yeah sometimes I get a bad connection or have to try a couple of times. Depending on which numbers and Cell companies I call. I find it is only during maybe peak calling hours. I used to call at 10-11pm and have trouble. But now I think with our Canadian daylight savings time, when I call at 10-11pm here it is 11-12pm there. Less people calling at those times i guess.

Anyway I used to use 20/20 Until I found out that after 4min of talking they charge 68 cents! for what i'm not sure. Now I use Jackpot. You get 178min for $10.

In Canada, we use Sprint to call. Charges 0.17/minute, and you don't have to worry so much about them robbing minutes or connection fees. These rates also apply to calls made to cell phones. One small problem that we do have with them is that sometimes calls don't get connected, and show up as a one-minute charge on our phone bill. We call Sprint, and usually get back over $5 in credits for unconnected calls. However, they've since changed the rule. We now have to wait 10 minutes from the time a call doesn't get connected to make that call again, otherwise they won't refund our money. All in all, though, at least we can talk to someone about the problems we experience, not like calling cards, which often rob time, and you never recover it.

I've been having problems calling cell phones too...

From the US I have been using Tel3 which has been pretty good - 8 cents a minute to a cell phone. They're online if you're interested!

Have you contacted your telephone company?

I have been having the same problem. I would call and get dead air for about 25 seconds then a fast busy signal. It was frustrating. My problems started happening when I came back from the DR in October. I called my telephone company and they fixed the problem. I began having the same problem over the weekend. There was an emergency happening down there and I could not get through. I had to use my cellphone to call (can't wait to get that bill  ). I was having problems calling out but no one from the DR was having a problem contacting me. I called my telephone company (Verizon) and requested that they check the line. Wouldn't you know that the problem was with my line.

How the technician explained it to me was that long distance and international calls are transmitted to "trunks" and sometimes get jammed. My area has 3 trunks and for some reason my calls were not going to the appropriate one. I was able to place calls to the DR within 10 minutes. Maybe my case is isolated, but I figured it just might help someone else.

Happy dialing!
