are hotel room safes "safe?"
Good to know people making $438 a month, about $100 US dollars a week do not steal. Makes me feel better.
Years ago I stayed in a hotel in Sosua. Had a pre-arranged agreement on rental. When I arrived was asked for more than agreed upon amount. Showed the confirmation e-mail--ok. 3 weeks later I look in the safe and I am missing money, not all, just the amount that we differed on at arrival!

I have never lost a thing in the safe in a hotel room here, or anything not locked up. Yes, they can be opened by a staff member, the security guy that will only do that with you on his shoulder. It's usually because that batteries died or that you misdialed your password. Also, with all of the video surveillance and lock controls, staff violating protocols, much less stealing, fear getting blacklisted from any of the good hotels. By the way, your combination changes when it is key/master opened. Air bnb or non major hotels, I hadn't lost anything there either.
Unfortunately, the reviews on Milokie are not that good if you read the 1 Star reviews.... does anybody know other options out there similar to Milokie?
CR, are you joking? Yes, I can be dense at times. But I can't imagine insurance covering losses like theft.

Travelers insurance will cover loses and thefts that happen in an airport, hotel or cruise ship.
How exactly do you PROVE that someone stole $1,000 CASH out of your Hotel Safe ?

Exactly, that was my thought. It seems ripe for ripoff unless they specify liability limits on cash.

The hotel safe will protect your valuables from any "guest" you bring into your room unless they see you enter the combination. Depending on the hotel it might or might not protect your valuable from unscrupulous staff members. Generally though in the larger hotels(Jaragua, Sheraton etc.) there is a cleaning lady and a supervisor 2 person crew which makes it harder to steal since someone is always watching. I would also highly doubt security personnel at these hotels would steal from your safe. Smaller hotels and Dominican owned chains(i.e. hodelpa) I have doubts as from personal experience doors dont lock properly and a general feeling of being unsafe. Poor quality safes are easily broken into or dislodged completely. As a pervious member mentioned if you leave something somewhere (i.e. cellphone) you will never see it again.
