Armed robbery at Banco Popular branch in Santo Domingo

The Banco Popular confirmed the robbery of its small branch located on Avenida Gregorio Luperón corner Calle Olof Palme. The robbery took place on 3 June 2024 at around 4:30pm.

The bank reported that no injuries were sustained by either customers or employees.

According to witnesses, four armed men with covered faces burst into the branch. While two of the men subdued the security guard, a third stole an undisclosed amount of money. A fourth robber was waiting in a getaway vehicle, in which the group fled after committing the crime.

The bank is working with the Police to identify and apprehend the robbers.

Banco Popular Dominicano announced that the staff of this branch will receive psychological support from a team of professionals from the institution. The aging security guard was not injured, but was shaken by the incident, as reported in Listin Diario...

The DR has seen some criminal activity from Venezuelans. Remember the fancy restaurant in SD where thieves entered and stole expensive watches from all the clients. They were Venezuelans, in fact they flew to Santo Domingo from Venezuela on that morning and left for Venezuela that evening. It seems their purpose for visiting the DR was to do the robbery. The DR never had something like that happen until then.

If they are foreigners, the DR needs to tighten border controls at all levels unless this becomes a habit. Next it could be flying to the DR for robbing a house of an expat on the north coast and afterwards head back to their countries. Repeat that a few times a year.

In many Latin American countries xenophobia against Venezuelans has increase a lot due to Venezuelan criminals in those places. In places like Peru Venezuelans complaint of outright discriminations from Peruvians and there is something similar going on in Ecuador. Venezuelans everywhere are aware of the heavy discrimination they face in several Latin American countries. I don’t know how much truth there is to the following, but one Venezuelan guy once told me that the issue is more critical in countries where Amerindian ancestry is the highest as many of the Amerindians and heavily Amerindians mestizos clearly dislike any sign of African festures, something common in many Venezuelans due to mixture. The DR doesn’t really has a widespread anti-Venezuelan feeling despite it has the largest numbers of Venezuelans in the Caribbean islands, but if more crime begins to happen by Venezuelan criminals expect that to change.

I remember when the PN chased down a one who robbed a Pica Pollo in Santo Domingo
near where I used to live... and shot him dead in the middle of the afternoon.
