I decided to sign up with this insurance because my wife has it.
I have never registered for any insurance in the DR, but it is my first time. In the U.S I do my physical periodically, I go to the vision, dermatologist, and sometimes urologist. but I don't how does it work in the DR.
What have been your experience using health insurance in DR? is ARS Universal a good insurance?

Each insurance has different levels of coverage. For example when you see a specialist you will pay a fee of anywhere from 500-2500 pesos after the insurance pays them a fee. Most of your lab tests/x-rays...etc will either be paid at 80 percent or even 100 percent depending on your insurance. Certain medications will be paid up the a cap limit. My wife had a Hysterectomy and the final cost to her was just over 8000 pesos, and that includes one night stay in the clinic.

That's the insurance we last had living in POP. Nothing to complain, always easy to communicate with them.

What bob saunders said above is the information printed on the pricing sheet if you go ask a quote from the insurance. So best check that properly... As far as who accepts Universal, we never had any problem BUT sometimes pharmacies had to wait for quite a bit to get a prescription approved...

For what it's worth, my father-in-law with multiple health issues (kidneys mostly) has had Palic/Mapfre for decades, has had countless surgeries etc and has never thought changing providers...

Universal used to be the one to have, with Humano a close second. No so anymore. Many doctors do not even accept Universal any longer.

If I could switch to Humano for what I pay Universal, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Interesting, good to know for future reference... Yeah, we have had no insurance in the DR after Covid so my reference to Universal might be a bit outdated. Back then we found it to be good...

I've had Universal for almost 40 years.

The last time I was in a hospital with a very bad MRSA infection that led to septic shock and pneumonia.

I ate lunch one day, felt like I was getting a bug and decided to go home, and by 4 o'clock I was delirious. One of my employees had called me to see how I felt, got no answer, and sent my driver to check on me.

When he found me, I was incoherent so he got me in the car and took me to the clinic.

So, in the space of 4 hours, I went from "OK" to scaring the daylights out of my doctor because I was out cold, with difficulty breathing and organs shutting down.

My doctor (Pablo Valdez) had me on Linezolid which is a very expensive antibiotic (among other treatments). He had me literally going through 1 IV bag after another to try to bring it under control.

While I was semi conscious, a Universal representative came to visit me, said I responded to his questions, and he insisted that my doctor discharge me, just to avoid paying the hospital charges and antibiotic treatment.

My doctor told him to get lost, and I spent another 5 days under treatment.

Once I was feeling better, My doctor told me he was worried that I would survive because of my condition.

That's why I don't mess around with MRSA infections. But, the Universal Rep wanted me sent home.

Good story! What is your best guess how you picked up MRSA ?

I know exactly where. In 1985 we were building a low-humidity shelter for transformer laminations in my factory and I scraped my leg against one of the metal brackets holding the boards together.
A couple of days later I passed out when I was walking to a plane to fly out of the country.
I woke up being transported in an ambulance and had my first "sense of impending doom" episode that scared the living bejesus out of me.
At the hospital, the examining doctor put his hand on my leg to reassure me, and told me he'd take good care of me and noticed my leg was warm.
That's when I started my antibiotics journey, and I can tell you I've been given all of them over the years due to recurring MRSA infections.

I've had ARS Universal for almost 15 years and I've been very pleased with it. It's extremely affordable and the coverage suits my needs. I work with the office in Sosua and the staff are terrific.

How was the rep able to get through to you? Which hospital was this? Everywhere where we have had family admitted, there is pretty damn good control on who gets to go even near the rooms, so I'm confused?

I would have attempted to report that rep and get them fired or something... And then the hospital staff for letting the rep to you...

I have ARS Universal. Very pleased with their service and coverage. No shortage of doctors that accept it here on the north coast or in Santiago.
