The Dominican culture was influenced by the Taino indians, the Spaniards and the Africans.
These is evident by the fact that Dominicans like to eat casave,yautia, yuca which are root vegetables the indians would cultivate.Spain's influence is seen in the fact that the official language of DR is Spanish. The African influence can be seen in the dark skin color.
There is also influence from the above 3 cultures in dominican music.
The guira, the drum and the accordion are popular musical instruments in DR.

Yes there is African influence in DR, but dominicans don't identify too well with the african culture. They feel they don't have much in common with africans. One example are the haitians. Dominicans and haitians culturally are like night and day. Dominicans identify more readily with the spaniard culture. Haitians are more in touch with their african ancestry.Other than dark skin color,they have nothing else in common with Dominicans. When you don't have much in common with a particular culture you don't mingle with or completely accept someone from that culture. This is why dominicans and haitians are not the best of friends. Dominicans tend to shun the haitians and keep them at a distance.

Off course Dominicans dont identify with the African culture they rarely are thought anything about it, but it is there weather you like it or not you can see it through the facial features and the skin tones the music etc... This thread is so funny and makes me laugh and even after science shows that most dominicans are of african decent,still some choose to use words such as ""some" or little to subliminal try to hate that denial to the smallest percent that there blood is that of the same as any african american
There was some ignorant individual here that assumed because one dominicano told him or suggested people take pride in there roots to return back to africa and made an assumption(which is a low form of knowledge that the guy was african american).WHOEVER WAS IT.DOMINICAN TONY WHATEVER YOU ARE A PATHETHIC FOOL!!!!!!!.if he were an african american how dare you have the audacity to tell him to return to african when your damn ancestors primarily are from africa and most likely the western regions of african just like his.SO why dont you go back to africa too..BLACK DUDE!!!
Now i live in washington heights and i have been surrounded by dominicans and ricans all my life just about up here in nyc,And sadly to be honest with you i have encountered several in my life who are clearly of african decent that deny it to the fullest they have african blood,just earliar today this black dude(dominican by the way) tells me dominicans are INDIAN with little african blood and some spaniard blood.I looked at this fool like he was crazy excuse the bluntness but one cannot debate DNA testing which shows dominicans are primarily of african decent.ALL OF THEM FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND TO SIMPLY SAY YOUR DOMINICAN WITH NO AFRICAN BLOOD WOULD SIMPLY BE SAYING YOUR NOT A DOMINICAN.and please dont come here telling me the same could be said if your not of taino indian decent your not a DOMINICAN ALSO.because the whole island of dominican republic became dominated by masses of african slaves that outnumbered every other race to the point it swallowed it.THIS CANNOT BE DENIED.

However to simply deny your african roots being a dominican is quite ignorant meaning (unaware)when it is so obvious.Now i cannot say whether or not MOST dominicans deny there african ancestry,however i will say that from my experience its the younger dominicans from ages 25 on down to the teens that seem to have no problem admitting they are latinos of primarily african decent,they acknowledge there mix and still acknowledge they are BLACK.I find that some i repeat some of the older ricans or dominicans deny there african roots like the guy today who was at least 45 years old.his own neice who was exactly my age sat and argued with him down telling him for years people in there family have told him that we are latinos with moreno blood by much and he denys it and its pathethic.I just laughed
