I may have to take my feminist hat off for second but...I do not see anything wrong with prostitution. If it was up to me, it'd be completely legal. Its the oldest profession in the world. No one is stopping it ever. Those who are going to do it, will do it no matter what, imo..... and scientific studies have shown that when monkeys have been taught the value of currency (using grapes and other goodies) the first thing that occurs to them is to sell sex. Hate to say it but humans arent really above the rest of animals like that.

Yes, its based on patriarchal BS but humans thrive on inferior/superior dynamics. We have done it since the beginning of time. We are sadly not above that either. if it wasnt women selling themselves, it'd be men. We really cannot seem to coexist without some kind of leader/subordinates thing going on. We dont have much on dogs.

In ancient Greece and Rome it was women who were sexually free and promiscuous. Men were the more restrained ones. Christianity flipped the script into men being the loose ones and I'm sure things will continue to flip back and forth over time. Gender roles are taught. Much of what we think is "nature" is just what societies imposed on us.

I think many of these women wouldnt have many other means of survival otherwise. If they werent selling it to gringos they'd sell to criollos. If its consensual, oh well.

And yes, many of them do find their prince charming, surprisingly. Thats what I was alluding to in a previous post when I mentioned the women living in mansions in the hills. I cannot tell you how many ex-hookers I have seen here who get put up by some gringo save-a-h*e either here in the DR or pa' fuera. Clearly the dudes know exactly what theyre getting into because they start out as johns. Heck I even know a girl in the u.s. who got put up after being an escort for the guy. It happens more than you think.

If theyre happy, I dont care.

As for the crime...well...I'm not sure if its necessarily hookers that bring it. Anywhere w alot of tourism will have alot of opportunists looking to make a quick buck off the visitors (who are often percieved to have money). Its just a fact.

"Ithe likes of you."

It is true that I do not have much respect for sex tourists. It is also true that I am most likely considered a liberal. Also true that I think that those of us who are born with privilege -- ie US and EU passports, white skin... should be aware of our privilege.

Also true that some men may find me intimidating. Not true that I set out to emasculate men... just perhaps do not play the role that some may wish women to play... <-----subjectively anecdotal

And no, it is not true that I hate men.. just the patriarchy.. What is it.. "do not hate the player, hate the game.".

And certainly, none of you could feel threatened by someone just posting on a message board, could you?

Uhmmm, I have a United States passport but not white skin....is my privilege discounted? Lemme me know how many credits I need to be privileged. I got a Doctorate of Medicine from Louisiana State University.....New Orleans(just to claim some Big Easy cultural AND corruption credits) how much is that worth?
I like when women say that men find them intimidating. That's an understatement and the wrong word also....but I think the other dude from Brooklyn was right about one part of his post. The weather, climate and beaches dont do it for some people. They practically drummed me out of Miami when I was always non-plussed about the weather and the beach. If not for the pretty women and the action at the resort town these people would depart for other areas. I got a friend who works at La Hacienda en Puerto Plata, cofresi and she tells me all the European guys come there looking for the dark skin girls. Were you to outlaw or abolish prostitution they would just hop to another island, Trinidad, Bermuda, St. Maartens, wherever.

Myself, I would never label all of them as prostitutes, but women trying to survive.

Try going to Sosua, try to talk to every working girl that you can, and find out how long they've been there. Don't miss the favorite local massage place.

I think you'll find, that the majority of the girls have very little time there.

Most come hoping to meet their principe (many do) and to see if the money is as good as they hear it is, find out it's not, and leave again after a short period of time.

For me, the prostitute is one that comes, try's it out, and stays. There's not as many of them as you think. Those are the real WU girls.

The rest are the ones that are lucky enough to meet a guy that likes them, takes them in, and helps them get out of Dodge.

Say what now? Paraphrasing "Inside every Ma Barker is a Mother Teresa."
HA!

Dominican Women and Domestic Battery?Violence

...the base excuse for a failed relationship is something along the lines of "he wasnt responsible...." and "he would beat me."

Hi,
Would I be right to assume that you can beat your wife or girlfriend in the DR, and as long as you don't severely beat them, a man wouldn't get in trouble with the law?

Is it "socially acceptable," to a certain degree, to beat a novia/espousa in the DR??? What are the repercussions??? Is there any legal statute of "domestic battery," in the DR, like here in the US???

Just curious,

No you can't legally beat your spouse/partner in the DR. As to socially acceptable - within certain elements of society it is still acceptable and happens on a regular basis. The government however is getting better at enforcing the law.

could we change this title thread or open a new one please - because everytime it appears it gives the impression there has been another robbery in sosua when everyone appears to be using the thread for anything under the sun

exactly the point of my frustration.

18 pages of whining and crying and finger pointing.

seems a great many threads here lately turn to the same after only a page or two.

This thread, which was a resurrected one in the first place, is going to go into Major Surgery throughout the day.

When it emerges it may or may not stay closed depending on it's health at that time.

At least for now CLOSED.
