But bigbird, that's what I'm referring to... All this coming from dominican police, who are not exactly straight shooters at the best of times. They and the govt have big reasons to manipulate facts. This is the big elephant in the room obviously. We need to protect the country's reputation. So it has turned into this who did what.
I'd like to add a little to this...
Back in 2008 when the police gathered up the Usual Suspects--which included me--i sat in jail with 4-other Dominicans also arrested as "suspects" in a foreign girl's death. And who exactly were the suspects for the murder of this foreign girl?
One was a motoconcho driver that worked in front of the hotel. One was the Watchie-man (security guard) at the hotel, one was her ex-boyfriend from years earlier. And one was me--i gave her a ride home 2-days earlier, but had not been to the hotel for 2-days prior to her death.
So far, so good. They had suspects.
I thought, Ok, well now they will begin the process of elimination by gathering up evidence and checking to see where each person was on the day of the murder, looking at our clothes, shoes, talking to any witnesses, gathering up forensic evidence, etc. etc. you know...all things that could lead to the murderer or murderers.
Unfortunately, none of that happened.
Worse still, they never even visited any of our houses, never spoke to anyone to establish any alibis, never looked at any of our clothes or checked our bodies for any defensive wounds, never searched for a weapon, never searched any clothes items for blood stains.
In fact, it was such a joke, that they never even spoke to any of the people who were with us on the day of the murderer and who could account for our whereabouts.
But here is where it gets even more absurd: After i wrote the story on DR1, I got contacted by a news agency from the home country of the girl. A reporter told me that the police had contacted the dead girl's parents and said that they think they know who did the murder, but that the suspect was in Punta Cana, and they needed money to go and apprehend him and keep him locked up--or something to that effect.
The police wanted money from the dead girl's parents!!
I will dig for his emails later and see exactly what the police told him. But in the meantime, it's suffice to say that regardless of where this case leads, I would not put too much faith in the investigation team...unless, of course, they have since developed experienced forensic teams and investigators/investigation teams have been sent abroad to the USA to learn evidence gathering techniques, modern DNA analysis, and they have been fortunate enough to acquire new technological equipment to analysis any forensic evidence--especially any DNA evidence.
Anything else short of this, I would be having Red Flags sprouting up inside your head.
I hope they catch the person. I hope it's not a Dominican. And i Hope the DR can solve this case. But whatever you do, do not put too much faith in police statements or Hotel statements until they provide concrete evidence.
