I have an observation/question:

On Tuesday, January 11, the OAS is says that Celestin came in third and thus would not be in the runoff election.

Today, Baby Doc returns to Haiti, and there are reports that he carried a diplomatic passport issued by President Preval's administration.

He was allowed to enter the country after spending some time at the airport.

Basically, I think I'm asking if this is some sort of political ploy coordinated by Preval?

When I was young and my sister was babysitting me, she used to tell me that the bogey man was going to get me (in some countries, it's the chupacabra).

Is Preval saying that if the people don't elect his candidate, then the people are going to get Duvalier back?

It sounds silly, but it is Haiti.

PS. My sister never married, and when she gets old and needs someone to be her medical power of attorney, I'm going to agree, and remind her about the bogey man AFTER all the papers are signed and notarized.

"Bebe Doc" is a political eunoch. I wouldn't lose too much sleep worrying about him. Maybe they'll come up with their own version of The SA "Truth and Reconcilliation" commission. Some healing would be nice and might just set the tone for the country to move forward.

Asked if Mr Duvalier's presence could destabilise the country, he said: 'Until now, there's no reason to believe that.'[/i]

 They can't be serious...so the current situation in haiti is refer as stabilized?

are you now our very own Wikileaks?

Neither spooking nor sleuthing, just privy to certain hidden history. France and the US have been at odds over Haiti since way before Francois Duvalier's administration. It was at the instigation of France that Papa Doc created the Tonton Macoute, as an armed civilian organization to counteract the power of the military. I will let those familiar with recent Haitian history fill in the blanks... ; )

Baby Doc

This all a play by the Preval-Celestin/mulatto-elite/USA intelligence agency-drug running faction.

The people have spoken. They want change. A government that is responsive to the needs and aspirations of the 99% and not the 1%.

The problem is that what the people want is at complete odds with what the power players want. Celestin has been rejected. Now that he and his handlers have been rejected, Baby Doc is brought in as a stooge/front man for these interests.

Who else could have guaranteed him safety upon return? This concept was conjured up most likely at Langley or in the State Department - Preval just takes orders.

The problem is that this might make things even messier. The line of inquiry being if Baby Doc can be here, why not Aristide ???

Is there no doubt that Aristide wold win the election hands down ??

The "elite" better yield and allow clean elections to go forward with Martelly as the likely winner or else a civil war will erupt.

Let's be clear.

Baby Doc was a failure as a head of state. Too young, not particularly bright, and in over his head from day one.

Don't let the fact that the country was technically politically stable for 15 years obscure his incompetence.

*And I disagree about the origins of the Tonton Macoute. Macoute were created to protect Papa Doc from the threat of a military coup primarily. Knowing the history of Haitian politics, and NOT being born of the business elite/old money or a member of the Haitian military.....Duvalier (pa) had 2 strikes against him in terms of being connected to the historic power bases in Haiti...Macoutes were his protection and his eyes and ears throughout the country.

Why is everyone so pro Aristide. This little ex-priest was dishonest, used the gangs to intimidate, stole lots of money, allowed drugs gangs to run free.....etc.

baby doc

No one is "pro Aristide"

The president of sovereign nation was kidnapped and exiled by a foreign force.

the democratic process completely was subverted.

If Aristide was such a bad guy then his people should have had an opportunity to vote him out.

found my hat

At this point, why would this man who's been ill, just got a couple of million back from the Swiss and is living in relative peace in France go back to Haiti? My understanding is that the french never gave him political asylum and only called his stay there "temporary". Why would he leave if he didn't have assurances he could go back to France? He hasn't made a move to live anywhere else in all of this time..

The calls to arrest and charge him..well, it would seem anyone could have seen that coming. Why risk prison unless there is no risk at all? I'm just throwing stuff out here, but it would seem to me that Baby there never really wanted or could handle the presidency in Haiti. He just wanted to eat, drink, fornicate and drive fancy cars. He wants to throw his hat into the
political arena NOW? I would be damned scared to go back to Haiti for fear of assassination. The only way I would do it is if I knew for sure someone else would kill me if I didn't go back and they're in a position to ensure my safety in Haiti if I agreed to go.

I tend to agree that this looks like a set-up for something else. I cannot even begin to guess what. Plans within plans.

What I have understood from this is that Haiti's future as it has been in the past is being manipulated by powers outside of it. For this, I am sorry.

While it is true that Aristide said he was kidnapped, there is also ample evidence that he resigned because he no longer had control of his country. Long before the uprising that ousted him, he was forced to pay foreign US guards from the Steele Corporation to protect him.

The reason that he is still so popular despite his failings is that he was the first President to include the 80% of the population in the discussion.

I do believe that he would win an election now, if he were allowed to return and run again, despite his malfesance.

Sadly, Preval was not a very good leader... elected with the support of the people who had supported Aristide but then apparantly serving the agenda of the elite... although he did at first try to run a coalition government.. Imagine how hard it must have been to bring in some of the chimeres.. the street gang leaders, who had be involved in some very brutal street killings against political opponents, to sit at the same table with the business elites!

Tougher than Obama dealing with the Tea Party that is for sure.

There will be an outcry now for the return of JBA. It has already started.

And really... perhaps both of them could help.

'. . . Actually, Haiti was better off during his father's administration.

. . . and many Dominicans today say the same thing about "His Excellency, Generalissimo Dr. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, Honorable Chief of State, Benefactor of the Nation, President and Dictator of the Dominican Republic".

I know that my wife does.

looking at this picture and the video posted earlier, the guy looks scared. even if other forces have an interest in him returning, i can't understand what made him come back. i don't think there is anything to win for him in haiti. he probably will get killed, prosecuted or if he is lucky, forced into exile again.

He was travelling in a Chevrolet Bel Air 1957, pale blue and white in colour. It was riddled with bullets and its whereabouts are unknown. While this was either one of his cars or maybe the one the assassins used - can anyone identify the make/model? - it isn't the one he was in when he was assassinated.
