Have you looked into buying sovereign bonds through BHD? Last time I checked, the interest rate was at least double that of BHD CD's. A friend told me that CD's at Banco Popular were only in the 3% range. Pathetic!
No, I didn't think of that.

I have been here a long time and dealt with most every bank here. BP will take whatever they can from you and more. They never have any money to pay out to speak of. You want $7,000 US from your account they send you to two banks to get it. Any teller in BHD can handle that. I guess for a small account it is OK for you. And BP is jammed with people all the time. Just NOT FOR Me.........
As far as Popular being jammed all the time...many of their branches allow you to make an appointment on line. I've taken advantage of that here in POP when I need to go to one of the larger branches. BHD and others may offer the same, I don't know,

What do I need an appointment for at BHD? I have never spent more than 20 minutes there.......

It's a one year peso certificate and I am getting 9.5 per cent instead of 9.00 at Bando Popular. And before anyone says it, I know that the depreciating peso against the dollar means that in the end there is not much difference against the dollar, but I live here in the DR so the amount of pesos I have is most important to me.
9.5% is pretty good. Any idea what the minimum investment is?

I think 10 tsd pesos are the minimal, but you won't get that interest. Beginning at 1 million the interests starts around the 9% for a year. It's all negotiable, if you a long time client, you can negociate a better interest much easier.
What times we had at the beginning of 2000, they (banco central) paid us 28% yearly...

I missed the 28% but did get 18% for 3 years somewhere around 2011(?).

Yeah they were giving the house away until they had to cough up 2billion in 03 to bail out the disgraced Baninter. Which, in turn, had devastating effects on the peso and the economy

The bulletin I posted in post 43 is from BPD, but it is not limited to BPD. You can get those rates from just about any bank.

Are you sure those can be purchased at BPD? One is from Banco Central, another is from the Ministerio de Hacienda. It doesn't say about the ones de "corto plazo" or what the minimum is? I was in Banreservas today and the best they had posted anyway was 5.25%.

All of those should be available at any bank except the Corto Plaza (Mutuo Popular) deposits.

A question for US expats that file a US tax return: Is investing in a certificate of deposit a wise choice? To be in compliance you need to report the interest on your US tax return and be concerned with other complications of dealing with a Dominican bank.
There are many alternatives that available (not for this thread) that offer high interest rates in the US.
So then, what is the attraction for the US expat to make this type of investment??

Besides the inconvenience of having to visit BHD every so often when they decide to lock my account when I decide to go out every so often on a weekend & card gets flagged. No complaints so far with them as a customer

Been with BHD since its inception. Never happened to me or anyone I know. Go to the service area and let them know. Have used it all over the World............

BHD will lock your account if there’s no activity in any 90 day period, if you’re not a full time DR resident be forewarned. We leave cash with a brother who deposits $10 a month into our account when we’re away.
