At Christmas I went to Barahona and stayed at the Hotel Playa Azul. It was relatively basic but very clean and very quiet. It is 10 minutes our of town, has a restaurant which is OK. We ate in town, there is a great food truck park with an awesome selection of trucks. The malecon is very popular at night with the locals that meet up and drink. A very friendly atmosphere. Don't expect any luxurious hotels or restaurants in Barahona. Not sure if you are planning to take any day trips but we did Bahia de las Aguilas (a long day trip which is about 3 hours from Barahona), Lago Enriquillo and Los Patos (a beautiful spot where the river meets the sea about 40 minutes after Barahona) and Bani Dunes. Here a few photos of the trip...prepare for a lot of driving but incredible landscapes. Oh, and it is hot, VERY hot. When we were at Bani Dunes it felt like it was 40 degrees Celsius!
