It is danogerous because of the bends and curves but mainly because of the speed of the cars and buses and the dangerous overtaking .
It is no more dangerous than any other road in the DR during the day or night having a similar bends and vehicle density. The additional risky part in play may be driving it when tired, when one's defenses have been weakened, a reason for finding a place to safely rest overnight.

I find it no different than anywhere in the DR, and I have driven there 5 times.
There is a big difference in roads that are DIVIDED and roads like this one that is NOT divided.. Anything can and does happen on roads like this. And it doubles after dark...........

I am used to driving on two lane roads. Two lanes, one in each direction are normal roads throughout the country. Divided roads are actually the exception. I agree with you about driving after dark, anywhere in the DR.

A rare point of a agreement with ya brother.

Divided roads should not be the exception.
And they are clearly better and safer.
In my youth I was used to squaring off against armed opponents.
Doesn't mean I ever liked it.

At Christmas I went to Barahona and stayed at the Hotel Playa Azul. It was relatively basic but very clean and very quiet. It is 10 minutes our of town, has a restaurant which is OK. We ate in town, there is a great food truck park with an awesome selection of trucks. The malecon is very popular at night with the locals that meet up and drink. A very friendly atmosphere. Don't expect any luxurious hotels or restaurants in Barahona. Not sure if you are planning to take any day trips but we did Bahia de las Aguilas (a long day trip which is about 3 hours from Barahona), Lago Enriquillo and Los Patos (a beautiful spot where the river meets the sea about 40 minutes after Barahona) and Bani Dunes. Here a few photos of the trip...prepare for a lot of driving but incredible landscapes. Oh, and it is hot, VERY hot. When we were at Bani Dunes it felt like it was 40 degrees Celsius!

Lago Enriquillo

Wasn't that accessible from the ocean (Caribbean Sea) a couple hundred years ago....
the first explorers sailed in there , if I recall correctly

Here he lies where he longed to be. Home is the sailor home from the sea and the Hunter home from the Hill. Robert Louis Stevenson has his requiem poem at his burial site in Samoa in the Pacific , a beautiful island of beaches and low hills but it could have been penned for this part of the DR with white sands, palm trees and the cooler climate hill towns.

looking for recommendation for a trip to Barahona. hotel?? sight seeing ???
Hello!

I realize you posted this a while back already. If you haven't already visited Barahona, we have a few resources that might help you plan your trip:

Where to stay in Barahona?
There is also a new hotel near the entrance of Barahona, Hotel Suite Ancla. The rooms and decor are really beautiful! It's a very comfortable and affordable option in Barahona. We will be highlighting this soon on our blog.

5-Day Road trip from Santo Domingo to Bahia de las Aguilas
We curated this epic road trip along the south coast. This trip packs quite a few sites in a just the right amount of time.

Highlights of the Deep South
Here is a post that covers many highlights of "el Sur profundo", Barahona and beyond. You may see something that catches your eye and you must see while you are here.

We hope this helps! Please feel free to ask any other questions that may come up.

The Hotel Guaracuya in Barahona is near the port, on the main road, Av Enriquillo, traveling to the SW, roughly halfway to Pedernales from Santo Domingo, It is an inexpensive place to stay, nothing fancy. It is quiet. It was at one time Generalisimo Trujillo's many rest stops. It is owned by the government. It is modest to say the least but does have clean rooms with AC. Make sure AC is working. Its restaurant may be open or not. There are two decent restaurants across the avenida from the hotel. In recent months there have been talk of using part of it as a school for the hospitality industry. It has been a while since this poster has passed by there, things may have changed but worth a try.

Regards,

PJT

Sadly, Hotel Guaracuya is closed. :( We used to love going there to hang out on the pier. You are right about the school. I believe they are turning in into an INFOTEP facility. It could possibly be a base for people to be trained in the tourism industry. The area will soon need thousands of workers to be employed in Pedernales/Cabo Rojo.

We stayed at Casa Bonita, I know they had a fire a while back, not sure if that’s affected operations. Lovely grounds and spa, but I thought the cost was higher than it should be.

Unfortunately, Casa Bonita has not been able to recover from the fire. For a while, they had their river suites open. But the main lobby, pool area, restaurant, and many rooms are in ruins. You are not able to make reservations on any site. I have seen postings on Airbnb for rooms there, but I would not trust going that route. It's not managed by the same company that it used to be, and it looks like private "hosts" are renting them out. It does not look legit.
