Beach hotel/resort/apartment for a weekend one night break from Santo Domingo

We would like to go somewhere for the weekend but new to driving in the DR - so need a destination on a "simple" route if that makes sense. Have a small dog which adds to the complexity. Would like a place on or near the beach for just a one night break and at this stage don't mind if it is a hotel, resort or other as long as it is pet friendly - any suggestions?

I think the whole east is easy to get to all the way out to Punta Cana.

Completely agree. From Boca Chica you have to go to the capital to get the APTRA bus at Parque Enriquillo, but after that, it's smooth sailing except for the tolls.
