There are only primary care centers and plush hospitals for the care of tourists and the wealthy. When people who only have basic insurance need hospital care, they must get driven to Higuey, about a 45-60 minute drive.

The Punta Cana area has several high-end private hospitals that are happy to take your cash, credit cards and international insurance. Yet they will just give primary care to anyone arriving to the emergency room with just basic insurance.

Diario Libre writes that the large number of employees and the rising population, now estimated at over 150,000, merit a public hospital.

Maybe they should rethink it. Instead develop the goverment insurance program Senasa and just use the private hospitals. Would that be an idea ?

Sounds pretty practical to me. According to the govt. something like 95% of Dominicans are covered by Senasa now, there should be a drive to cover the rest.

Is there a Dominican that cannot be covered by the basic SENASA plan? 5% probably just didn't get their cards at the SENASA office.

For private clinics the problem is that it would require that "expansion" of SENASA to a level that private clinics would accept it.
That is not a small obstacle.

Many private clinics and doctors accept SENASA. You can get the specifics on their website.

So true . Hospitals in PC are ...at best ..."business first , if you want to live "...and at worst ...money grabbing scams ! Even with good insurance ...it's still a crapshoot. Last year....one of the workers...45...wife and kids... had chest pains ...and was rushed to one of the large hospitals in PC ...with insurance...they injected him with only God knows what ...died within 30 minutes.... at the hospital ...his wife then got a call about payment ... to say that there was an issue with his insurance ...on the same day 😖😡. RIP GJ .🥲 🙏
