I like the small Villa Domaine Marois just across the street from la Battagliera. They are French Canadian so it helps if you have some French. Their apartments are spacious although the cooking area is rather basic. Rooms are good but nothing fancy. They have a nice pool, a very good breakfast, attractive grounds and are quite friendly.
I was able to bargain their weekly charges way down so that it was more than affordable.
It is a bit off the beaten path but that makes for a quieter stay as they are located on a dead end street.
There are several colmados and colmadones nearby. It is only a 5 minute walk to the beach and Duarte.

We are also a couple in the 50 -70 range. Have been visiting BC for the past 4 years and will also be there for the month of February 08. Perhaps we will link up with you folks.
We did look at rooms in Neptunos and it was not what we were looking for. There are tons of resources in this site and others to look at costs and pictures of the rooms. We have not finalized our plans yet.
We hope to make it to Carnival in SD this year. If you need any advice just respond to me and I'll try to help. ronken

Hi Ken Marylin Steve Donna, We Ron and Kendra will be at Hotel Zapata. We love Boca Chica and hope to meet you and share some stories. Do you ever rent a motor bike?

What happened to Boca Chica?

We just stayed last Saturday night at Hotel Zapata--Friendly staff, good free breakfast-- But, frankly, we were VERY disappointed with Boca Chica!
We were there for a one-day cruise stop 15 years agao, and I've never seen a worse beach transformation! Why?
1. Horrible industry at west end of beach (near Zapata!) Not my idea of tropical scenery!
2. What's left of the beach is covered by chaise loungues instead of palm trees
3. We like to walk the beach and as we headed east, we were stopped at some orange monstrosity of a hotel where the guard wouldn't allow us to continue our walk!
4. Trash everywhere, especially in the evening after everyone's moved inside, but also floating in the once-beautiful water!

I'm prejudiced because we just bought a small house near the gorgeous beach in Las Terrenas-- But, for the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would spend time at Boca Chica (okay---have at me!)

Best hotel in Boca Chica is the Hotel Angelgabriel. Clean, friendly, safe, great breakfast on the patio, swimming pool, away from the tourist strip but next door to the Hamaca all-inclusive resort/casino which for some reason is now named Bee Live. Angelgabriel is a boutique hotel, not many rooms so call for reservations: 809 523-9299. Rates start Starts at $40 a nite. Very secure parking inside gate. Across from the Neptuno restaurant, which is pricey and is not recommended by me. The real attraction of Boca Chica is that it's 15 minutes from the airport. William.
