Well... About 2 1/2 decades ago I went shopping to Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream Long Long Island and the only "blacks" were us. That's to say we had just arrived from the DR, where we had been laying around the sands at Playa Dorada like bread slices in the toaster. Our tans were nice, but we looked like blacks when compared to the sea of white in that Mall. Not even the security or maintenance personnel were made up of minorities there! Speed up to today and the reverse is truth...

Same thing happened to me in Chicago, Austin and the most memorable one was in Menomonee Falls in Wisconsin, where the local high school looked like a set from Happy Days reruns... I recently visited family in Tecumseh in Ontario, and it was all Deja vu...

As more minorities reach better income levels, now is more common to see other non-whites in those venues. In the DR purchase power goes hand in hand with the racial/income breakdown. The lighter the skin the more odds are, that they historically had been families with an established income source.

Many here forget that the DR was a Colony, not a democracy.
As of late the racial/economic divisions have been shattered somewhat in the DR; more and more people are joining the higher income brackets, from these mixed income-minorities than ever.

AZB in the DR there's not a single Mall/Plaza/shopping center where race plays a role. Not a single one!

By any chance did anyone see a new Greek restaurant in the works?
Sounds far fetched but one can hope.

Salvatore Ferragamo opens for the DR's clients at Blue Mall...

I wonder about the cost of Ferragamo shoes in the DR.

(About 5 years ago, I went inside the Kenneth Cole store at Acropolis: short-sleeved, white shirt: the equivalent of US$120. I was wearing the same shirt, but long-sleeved, bought for US$69 at the Kenneth Cole store at the Houston Galleria.)

Ferragamo shoes at the Ferragamo store here in TX: usually from US$390-520 and higher. At the Blue Mall, possibly 30,000-45,000 toletes... y cuidao! Now, imagine a pair of US$2500 Kiton shoes... 5 mil de los verdes a lo mejor! Diablo! 150,000 l?grimas por un par de zapatos!

AZB, I don't know what stores you visit here in US. Last Sunday I went shopping with my wife to "Ross" store in Knightdale NC and something I noticed was that everybody was of Afro American descendancy there...

JJ

That's cause Ross is a ghetto store (which I like BTW). Try Dillard's, Von Maur, Nordstrom, etc...and you may have a different experience.

But it does have a food court? Or are the food places scattered about helter skelter?

All the food places are located on the 4th floor.

Also, the car parking is excellent. Wide berths, lots of space and actually well planned out, as opposed to nightmares like the Malecon Center.

It's about time. It seems there is no rhyme nor reason as to how they set up parking lots and garages. Spaces too small and close together, especially in plazas. How people maneuver jeepetas in them is amazing.

Do they have dedicated invalid parking and is it designed for easy access. I would like to visit as shopping can be difficult at some of the older places in town.

The have disabled spots near the elevators and escalators.

The parking births are pretty wide and I didn't see any steps.
I could be wrong, as I wasn't paying much attention to the access.

that Blue Mall sure will have its needed clientel in Santo Domingo,
thanks for the Fotos Pichardo, looks stunning.
for the one planned in Punta Cana I doubt that it will be successful the next 5 years at least,
here we have by far not the needed number of clientel willing to spend money at the high end shops,
Punta Cana simply does not have that amount of Cash Cows.
Santo Domingo without any doubt has it, it will run nice there.
Mike

Agreed. The mall looks beautiful... can't wait to check it out next time I'm in SD.

As for the one in Punta Cana... I just don't get it. We don't have enough people here with that kind of income so support it. But seeing that they haven't even broken ground yet, I'm sure it won't be open until 2012 at the earliest...maybe the economy will have picked up by then.

I went to Acropolis at New Year, I shall not be going again, it was ridiculously expensive, two coffees and one jugo cost over RD$300. The escalators are dangerously fast, I'm a bit wobbly on my pins, I went up one and ended up doing the splits and nearly falling. The down ones were so fast, the step I aimed at went by too fast I couldn't get on it and ended up coming down the stairs. i look forward to visiting this Blue Mall.
