The National Botanical Garden family announces the passing of architect Benjamin Paiewonsky Batlle (1934-2024) who served as the first director of the National Botanical Garden from 1976 to 1996.
The Botanical Garden notice highlights that Paiewonsky’s architectural legacy is extensive and varied, extending beyond his role as an architect to encompass landscape architecture, engineering, and university teaching. His contributions to the Dominican Republic’s built environment are innumerable. Paiewonsky himself was especially proud of the major landscaping creation of the Botanical Garden in Santo Domingo and the lesser known gardens at the top of Isabel de Torres mountain in Puerto Plata.
