Authorities in Puerto Plata reported the temporary interruption of traffic from Puerto Plata to Sosúa on the north coast due to a structural failure of the Sabaneta de Cangrejos Bridge over the Camú River, near the Puerto Plata International Airport.

As reported in El Caribe, residents say the bridge broke due to a lack of maintenance.

Claritza Rochette Peralta, governor of the province of Puerto Plata, said an assessment is needed to decide whether to reopen the bridge.

This bridge has been in disrepair for ages. The traffic to and from the airport from Puerto Plata on a daily basis is consistent and voluminous. Large buses pass daily and yet it seems as if it was decided somewhere to just wait until there is a collapse or near calamity before doing anything about it. It's not like there are several alternative routes from the city. This is very important and shame on the powers to be for letting the bridge get to this point.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the usual Dominican maintenance programme, from vehicles to bridges. Wait until something breaks, and do the "maintenance" afterwards!

The problem area of the bridge is clearly visible.

Basically, the bridge is in an initial stage of collapsing.

There is the same problem with the bridge that collapsed on the road to Otra Banda in September lastyear ,complete lack of any maintenance work ,as reported here in DR1 .Nothing has been done to repair it and the detour will be impossible to use when we get some rain. This Dominican trait of waiting until something breaks is hard to change.
