What is '$20k' supposed to mean?
If it stands for 20,000 DOP (= Dominican Pesos), then here are the relevant quotes from the two mentioned websites:

1. "Travel Notes:
When traveling to the Dominican Republic, one should be aware of the various restrictions placed on currency imports and exports, namely:
Import and export of Dominican Pesos is restricted to amounts under 20,000.
Import and export of foreign currency of amounts over 10,000 USD must be declared. "

2. "W?hrung: Dominikanischer Peso
Ein- / Ausfuhrbeschr?nkungen (in Landesw?hrung, je Person):
E: Landesw.: deklarieren ab DOP 20.000, Andere W.: deklarieren ab USD 10.000
A: Landesw.: deklarieren ab DOP 20.000, Andere W.: deklarieren ab USD 10.000"
FYI: E = Import; A = Export.

Interesting.
Now we have some contradicting website information. :bunny:
Yet the above sentence does not stipulate the limit of Dominican currency which may be brought into this country.

Not in question, really.

Janin

Janin - tell me - what does a German bank's understanding of what can be imported actually have to do with the fact that Dominican customs limit cash importainon to US10k? The fact is it has nothing to do with it - case closed!!!(For solving this complex case I think I will reward myself with a cold one and ponder on how these RD pesos ended up in a foreign country,:))

Janin:

I bet you could fit at least 50K Pesos in a loaf of your schwarzbrot. Nobody looks at bread these days.

Tambo.. Dude....

You've got to reduce the size of those pix, before posting, to stop stretching out the forum page so wide that you'd need 2 monitors to view it.
Go to Image resizing, do it with PIXresizer
to download the pix resizer.
It will resize a pic to the correct size for the forums, in it's default position.
It can do a bunch of other things too, like entire files in seconds.

(This is the size it reduces it to)

Just to muddy the waters. I have been told by three different UK banks or money exchanges that the maximum quantity of DR pesos which travellers are allowed to take into the DR is RD$25,000. Where they got that from and whether it is out of date I have no idea.

You may bring any amount of pesos, if you declare it to Customs. Surely, if you bring more pesos than the equivalent of $10K, you will be questioned even though you make the declaration. If you bring more than the equivalent of $10K in pesos, without declaring it, then it's money-laundering.

thank you Mr. Guzman!

and there you have it folks, just like on the form!
in fact you'll see, if you read it more closely, that it says "(In any kind of currency or legal monetary document)" meaning the equivalent of $10k USD regardless of the currency or instrument. :cheeky::bunny::bunny:
Front of Customs form asks you to declare if you are carrying more than US$10,000 in currency or monetary documents.
